CTC's Current Recruiting Strategy

Recommended Posts

I believe that CTC's recruiting strategy has evolved in some ways (and remained the same in others), largely due to lessons learned from Patterson and Hollowell.

Some bemoan our large number of offers, but I wonder if there are common threads in them:

1) Lots of offers are fine, but only if they are to high character kids from good family situations.

2) Spending considerable time on a five star that doesn't have an independently expressed interest in IU is no longer a tactic.

3) Lower ranked kids are fine, but ONLY if they are from a good home and have a particular skill that is hard to find (ie; April's size and Priller's shooting at 6'9").

5) Locking down the State is only applicable when there are no handlers involved.

Do you all think our recruiting priorities have evolved a bit?

I'm just left wondering what 4) is...cliffhanger! Seriously though...I don't necessarily think high character and good family situations always go hand in hand. If the guy can play and isn't a trouble-maker, but doesn't come from a good family I don't see any issues. Edit: I think I may have misunderstood your first point, but I'll keep that point there anyways. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

Didn't mean to imply otherwise.

What I am trying to say is...more than ever, CTC is trying to avoid kids that will end up being a royal pain in the arse.

Lots of offers are fine, but none of them are going to kids with high rankings but also with pain in the arse potential.

Yeah I think I kind of misunderstood what you were saying, but yeah we're on the same page now.

Let's face it, the best players make the best coaches with few exceptions. By that I mean the best coaches won't consistently win without 4 and 5 star talent. Crean got caught off guard not only by Fishers transfer but also thatJurkin could not stay healthy. He also probably thought Vonleh may stay for 2 years like Cody. The 2 bigs he got late was not some strategic plan obviously. He took what he thought could help but missed on many others. A program the stature of Indianas has to consistently get those 4 and 5 star players if we ever hope to hang banner 6. Creans future also depends on it although another year like last probably won't make a difference.

I respect everyone's opinion on this. The fact that Tom Crean's style at IU, revolves around a fast paced style like the old days. Bringing his hire into this prestigious university, he brought all sincere Indiana traditional thoughts and vibes. I think when kids sign for Indiana, they go for the dream to go pro, good school/academics, and the great past IU has had.

Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

I like Crean ' s energy, relentless recruiting, and ability to find flying under the radar players, but he needs to get some pure talent in the upcoming years. Right now I see us losing them to just about everybody. It's also hard watching KJ getting it done at UL.

Indeed. Unfortunately for us UL just won a National Championship a couple of years ago so Pitino has a good story to tell recruits and you add a very good recruiter like Kenny Johnson to their staff and U of L looks to be in good shape right now with that strong tandem. For me it's hard to believe that KJ made less than 10% of CTC's salary while at IU. That is probably the case at U of L also because I'm sure Pitino's salary is even higher than CTC's, but it seems to me that some very good recruiters are underpaid. You have to get good players to win. Good coaching, of course, is also important. I was hoping we could get Mitchell. Hopefully we will have some good recruiting news in the near future.

UL doubled KJ's salary. I think we were behind the 8 ball on his raise, but any amount probably wasn't gonna keep him here. We will feel the effect for a while. IU needs to win yesterday.

I just want to nab a high recruit early so we can get rid of this year's "Crean can't recruit" discussion. The guy can recruit, his flaws are on the court. Hopefully Martin can not only bring kids in but be a louder voice in CTCs ear about some of his in game strategies. Like playing Johnny Marlin in that Northwestern game. That game was the turning point in the season and in my mind Crean blew that game for us. But I shouldn't be so critical of a man I blindly follow.

After last year, I think Crean does see the importance of character when it comes to building a team that has good chemistry and leadership.

Does anyone believe that if JaQuan Lyle qualified academically tomorrow, Crean would welcome him to IU with open arms? I don't.

I'd rather have a good academic student who has the potential to build team chemistry, than a murky hyped freshman who probably wouldnt contribute any more than say, Rojo.

Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

He played well, but had so many off the field issues that finally resulted in an arrest and what should have been an assault conviction, that he is no longer with the team. Wasted scholly, smudge on the program, and distraction to your team. I don't think the importance of character can be understated.

Yessir, I remember that well. Couple of weed possessions and an assault charge? Is that right? Sooners got him now, hopefully he represents them a little better.

Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners[/quote] Correct, except no assault charge. His girlfriend begged her roommates not to press charges and DGB's dad also talked them out of it. Shady stuff.

This is a good point but then I started to think back and honestly I cannot really think if kids UK brought in that proved to be of questionable character. Can talk about kids that we think we paid to come but that seems different than character.

I love the kids like Vic. Overachieve on and off the court and generally because we do a
