Top NCAA Coaches

ESPN released a list of the top 50 coaches #50-25 today. Crean was left off the list of 50. http://es.pn/1tBCMw6 Medcalf also wrote up an opinion of the list with a section specifically on Crean. Pastner? Boyle? Miles? I could go on and on naming guys from their list who's resumes are worse or at best on-par with Crean's.
@eamonnbrennan: It should be noted that we're ranking coaches based on present performance. It's an up-to-date measure, not about legacy.

I read this as, "based on last season."

If it's based on last season along, then I wouldn't put Crean in the top 100.

But, what does "up to date" mean? I would take that to mean there careers to date, not just last season.

To be fair I think Miles is better than Crean. Screw resume, just look at the talent levels an how the teams perform.

BUT as much a I want Crean gone he is likely a top 25 coach and it shouldn't be debateable. I just feel for IU to be elite on a yearly basis we need an elite coach, top 5-10 type.

At some point your resume reflects your skill. Which we can use to promote and discredit Crean. But if Miles is the specific example, he had a great year last year, but his overall resume is ok, not terrible but not great either.

I don't think very many people believe that Coach Crean is a top coach. Charismatic, yes but he is quite pedestrian as a coach and team builder.

But while he probably isn't a top 25 coach, he certainly IS somewhere between 26-50 imho.

Last years team was a disaster, especially in terms of how it was constructed, no doubt. But, he also built the 11-12 and 12-13 teams from complete scratch. So to say he's pedestrian as a team builder isn't accurate IMO. We'll see how the next couple years play out, but IMO he's proven he can build very good teams.

Add the Wade MU team and the James, McNeal, Matthews, etc team he built at MU that was also really good (remember he left MU right as that group was going to be seniors).

McCaffery is too high if this is based on last season. In the grand scheme of things that team underachieved.

Yeah Iowa went from a serious Big Ten title contender and surefire NCAA team to being in a play-in game.  And that was with a veteran roster.

More than likely it means somebody needed to produce an article to fill space so...there ya go.

ESPN constantly pumps out these fluff pieces for clicks so people on message boards will visit the site. They manufacture drama. Case in point: Jaws made a statement 2 years ago that Kaepernick will be the best QB of all time. Every analyst then weighed in on it, it became a huge story. They manufactured the whole thing and it was on PTI and SportsCenter for weeks. ESPN is garbage. So, this list means about as much to me as a list of top 100 movies. It's subjective. Screw ESPN

IMO Crean may be a top 50 to 100 coach now....But he and all the other current coaches, save for a few, pale in comparison to the top coaches of the past. You look at the career of Gene Keady for example. Never one a championship, not sure about a final four, but was a heck of a good coach. I feel that he, as well as a lot of others would dominate today's so called top coaches. The game has just changed so much. Its all about athletes now. Its not as much about game plan and tireless preparation. That is something that I believe a lot of the top coaches leave out in today's game. Throw a ball out, and let the best talent win!
