What is your favorite thing about IU?

Recommended Posts

I was a Phi Kappa Psi at the top of the hill on North Jordan. It was great being in a house with 85 guys as there was always something to do. At a big school like IU, it helps to have a common bond with a lot of guys. Just pledge the house you fell most comfortable in. Dan Dakich lived in our house so we used to get good scoop on the inner workings of the basketball team. All the Greek houses sit together usually with the sororities at football games and we never missed a game. The first year we were 0-11!

I started out with the intention to major in Business but didn't meet the required GPA in my core classes so I went SPEA with a lot of other people in the same boat I was in. Don't get too caught up with "I have to get in to Kelly Business school or I won't have a chance to get a good job" mentality. I have been in sales and banking jobs since graduation and my IU degree prepared me well.

One of the coolest classes to take when I was there was Coach Knight's coaching basketball class. It was always sold out, so I never got in, but if you were 1 minute late to class, you weren't getting in the door that day as he locked it at 9 am sharp. Best advice I have is to go to class, ask for help from your professors as most are willing to help.

Take some electives that are out of your major, One semester a buddy of mine took, History of Rock and roll, drug use in American society and a sex history class offered. So he actually studied sex, drugs and rock and roll that semester. The history of The Beatles was also offered.

Yea, thats great advice. I definitely want to take some courses that I can have fun with (plus a nice GPA boost maybe haha). Thats pretty cool that your fraternity got an inside scoop! I like the idea of Greek Life and living in the beautiful houses they have in Bloomington, I just don't want to be restricted to only being friends with the people in my house. So I will have to get a feel for that all myself, see if its for me, and if I even necessarily will be restricted to just the guys in my house.

I also want to get involved in campus radio or managing the football or basketball team. I'm sure those positions are competitive though, so not getting my hopes up.

I have cousins who went to Indiana during the Knight championship years and they still make their way back to campus at least once a year. They always refer to their time in Bloomington as among the happiest of their lives. That is partially why I am so excited.

Like I've said, theres so much at IU I hope, four (maybe five if I do the 3/2 MBA) years is enough!

Thanks for the reply, I appreciate it.

Appreciate that. We are always looking for newbies to help with the content. If that's something you are interested in shoot me an email at btownbanners@gmail.com & we can talk more about it.

Bloomington is an awesome special place to almost everyone that goes there. It's hard to put those feelings into words honestly. The best advice I can give you going into your freshman year is to be flexible, be social and don't then down many invitations to do things. My freshman year in Briscoe, I met a group of guys that I still talk to every week (9 years later). My roommate and I had an open door policy for the first month of school and it allowed us to get to know everyone very quickly. Dorms can be fun, just don't be an idiot in there!

I prefer the Northwest dorms, but that's primarily the type of friends and environment I enjoyed most. To each is own on where they live. Athletes all live in Northwest since it's close to the facilities, it's really fun if they are on your floor. The girl parade out of their rooms is RIDICULOUS. ANd I mean RIDICULOUS!!!

Use the forum as a way to get your questions out, former Hoosiers LOVE talking about their past experiences.

As far as your Greek questions, I would tell you to 100% go to the rush kickoff event, meet the fraternities and go to their parties and events and see if you like them. I did that, but never with the mindset id actually join one, so I didn't. There is a good life in Btown wether you are on the Greek side or not. Just find out if it's a good fit for you and you like the people and go from there.

If you've got any Kelley questions, let me know. Loved that place and got my two degrees from Kelley. Having that on your resume is huge in my experience. That's all I got for now!

Awesome! I'll email you sometime in the near future haha. Thats so cool that you still talk to your college friends nine years later! Those are the type of connections I think I am most excited for. I definitely want to make the most of my time in the dorms.

I may send you some questions about Kelley some time. A Kelley degree is priority #1 for me.

Thanks a ton for your advice and everything. I'll email you sometime

My dad told me that when he was there people would take lunch trays and go sledding down the hill where the baseball and softball fields use to be and Foster and McNutt had a big snowball fight and the police had to break it up because there were so many people.

I think you might be pleasantly surprised by the Southern Indiana weather. It's all relative but coming from NE Indiana I found the Fall to run longer and the Spring to start sooner.

Really? Thats awesome. Its been an insane winter in NJ, fortunately snow doesn't really bother me. I'd rather it be too cold than too hot!

I've lived in Southern Indiana my entire life, the weather is absolutely bipolar.

Can you get in there at 18? I know fake IDs are kind of useless at IU.

You also seem pretty knowledgable about fraternities, want to share any input on that. Are you a current student?

No, you have to be 21.

And I graduated in 2012. There's a lot to share about sororities and fraternities, what would you like to know?

Northwest is the only place to live. I live in the KLLC freshman year, its a solid place. All basketball players live in briscoe as freshman. Was in bowling class with oladipo and raph smith freshman year.

You wont be able to get into Roys even most likely with a fake but Bluebird and Dunkirk are easy enough to get into.

Basically from the kids I've talked to I've heard the IFC has placed a lot of rules like no hard alcohol on Fridays... How do they go about enforcing such rules? If they can go into the parties why doesn't everyone just get in trouble for underage drinking? Do cops ever bother the fraternities? How big of a time commitment is it being in a fraternity? I like what they preach and that students are held to a certain gpa, I also like that there's plenty of philanthropic opportunities made easily available through Greek life. Do you have any advice about rushing? If you don't mind my asking, which fraternity were you in? General comments about all things IU/the Greek life there would be awesome. Again thanks for posting Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

Cool! Are athletes fairly accessible or do they mostly hang amongst themselves? I'm excited to be living in northwest for sure!

Thanks for the bar tips! Any cool oladipo stories? Haha

I posted this to someone else in another thread a while ago so this is a good start.

This is all you need to know.

1. Kilroys

2. Sports

3. Nicks

4. Dunkirk

5. Bluebird

Brothers sucks, Jakes sucks, Upstairs is decent, The Vid sucks

For coeds:

Pi Phi

Alpha Phi

Tri Delt

Zeta

The strip club (Nightmoves) sucks. Only go if you're blacked out.

Don't go into the football games. The fields are a magical place. Stay there as long as you can.

Pregame before every basketball game, HARD.

Yogis has good food and good brew on tap; chill place.

Live close to campus. Out by college mall sucks, the villas suck (pretty much anywhere north of 17th street sucks).

$2 Tuesdays at Kilroys is pretty much the best night to go out. $3 Thursday is good too. Oh and Monday $1 wells at Kilroys too. Just go to Kilroys a ton.

Kilroys back patio is heaven when it gets warm. Take full advantage of that. Also go to every breakfast club before games. Get a good base of food in and get hammered before every game for cheap.

Roys gives out tee shirts on thursdays for 3 bucks. I probably own 100. Get those.

Thats about all I've got. Follow those guidelines and you'll have an absolute blast.

EDIT: I got shit for saying to not go into the football games. Do what you please BUT, you'll find out pretty fast what is more fun, the tailgate fields, or the game. Just saying......

My advice: get involved. If you think you might enjoy something, go out and do it, even if its just for a little while. If you don't think you will like it, go to the call-out meetings for the free food.

I lived in Teter, and while it may not have been the most glamorous, I lived on a co-ed floor. So. Much. Hookups.

IU is a different experience for everyone, depending on what they chose to do with their opportunities. Take yours, and do with them what you will. Just make sure you can't look back and say, "What if?"

Unless you live on their floor, you won't be able to get in their friend group.

Ive got plenty of oladipo stories. The one that is my favorite is when they lost to UK that year. Once he came back from bowling, he told me and a couple other guys who were talking to him that he would be the most improved player next season and that he's coming for revenge.

We know how his Jr. season turned out. Pretty special guy, super nice.

'07 here.

You think you've had sandwiches, and then you have your first Dagwood's sub and it's like your world goes from black & white to color.

Bloomington is just...it's a very aptly named city, because it's just constantly teeming with life. I don't know if that's just college towns in general, but you definitely get the feeling there is something going on in Bloomington 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Springtime in Bloomington, especially, is like nothing else.

I fully admit my glasses have gotten rose-tinted with time, because I found plenty to kvetch about while I was there, and you will too, but it's so worth it. In general, when you're in college, it can be kinda hard to see the forest for the trees and appreciate your situation; when I was there, I never had the sense of "these are my COLLEGE YEARS" or "this is my COLLEGE EXPERIENCE" - it was just kinda like "This is where I am in my life right now, whatever." But with hindsight, it becomes clear how mind-blowing it is to be at IU. I miss it everyday, but I'm lucky to live close enough (~2 hours) that I can make it up there for a day or two now and then.

Thanks for all the great answers guys. The first time I stepped on campus I got a feeling that Bloomington was a special place, and everyone from message board posters to my distant cousin has confirmed that. I've been excited for IU ever since then. The day after I left campus, I knew that Indiana was where I wanted to be for college. Couple the campus feel with all of the opportunities made available to students and I can confidently say I will always be proud to be at IU. All of your recommendations have been noted and I look forward to trying everything Bloomington has to offer. Hopefully in the coming years I can bring an on campus perspective to the board.

Thanks a lot, Hoosiers are a special breed

And for the love of everything holy. Do go in to the football games. You can drink beer anywhere and everywhere and at any given point in your life. But there are only a limited number of football games you'll get to see, even fewer as a student. Go to them. Support your fellow student athletes. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

Yep. Football games are awesome. I went to about 5 this year and had a blast at all of them. ESPECIALLY Penn State.
