Steve Alford doing great in first year at UCLA

Recommended Posts

26-8. Just beat Arizona in PAC tournament. Great recruiting class for next year. I know a lot of people didnt want him but he is proving himself in my opinion at a blue blood.. I think he would have done well at IU too. Just my 2 cents. Hard to out Iowa because few want to go there and he was decent there. He was great at New Mexico working with nothing.

I've always liked Alford he just seems to come short come tourney time. I'm interested to see what he does with this team.

I think he's done a great job! Shoot, in his first year there he has already won more conference tournaments (1) than IU ever has.....

Alford has never taken any team past the sweet sixteen

Yes he has..... He also has never coached at a school with the recruiting power he will have at UCLA! He's never had the talent but that will soon change!

Naw man the farthest he has made is the sweet sixteen. I do agree he can at UCLA though.

My bad I thought you said that he's never taken a team to the Sweet 16!
I wish him the best of luck! I just want to see the Hoosiers do well and get another banner! I hope Crean is the coach that will lead us there...

Ucla has a ton of talent. I actually think they're a sleeper for the Final Four. I'm not impressed, though... No different than Bruce Weber with Head, Brown and Williams. Give him time.

I'm not a fan of Alford and don't want him at IU...but he has done well this year and should be recognized for that.  However...I was reading an article on ESPN.com that UCLA is one of the top 10 early upset bids...in fact, they were ranked as #1 (which supports a posters statement about his innate ability to buckle come post-season).

we shouldn't have hired Sampson because he was a cheater with no sense of right and wrong

we shouldn't have hired Alford because he is not necessarily a cheater (I have some concerns about how he got Tyler Smith from Giles County, TN to Iowa) but he certainly lacks a functioning moral compass

the way he advocated for Pierre Pierce should forever lump him together with the people who allowed the Sandusky scandal to unfold at PSU

I hope he does well in the tourney and cements his legacy in Westwood. He has had as many naysayers as Crean and seems to be responsing well. Just a shame he didn't even get an interview here, but the administration seems dead set on not hiring any of the best candidates. Didn't they have some focus group of 20 people be in charge of hiring Crean?

Best candidates? How does he qualify as one of the best candidates? The dude has done nothing in his career in the postseason. You guys whine and complain about Crean and him not getting past the Sweet Sixteen enough and think Alford is a good hire, that makes absolutely no sense

I will take his record over Creans although he has never made it to a Final Four. He had some sucess at Iowa as I think he won a big tournament which we have never done. You add in the obvious IU playing credentials so yes I say he should have been one of our best candidates. Strong Hoosier ties also which helps in recruiting. I'm not saying he was my first choice but he should have been in the discussion and my complaining of Crean has never centered around what Steve Alford would have done. Its been totalling centered on the product Crean puts out there.
