Q: Best Player on Offense in B1G? A: Yogi Ferrell

Recommended Posts

I am a big fan of efficiency on offense. Efficient players help their teams more than inefficient players. That should be obvious. I especially like efficient players who play a major role on offense. It's easier to be efficient if you don't do too much. Jeff Howard is the second most efficient player on the team. But, he's barely involved in the offense when he's in the game, so it doesn't matter too much. If he were more involved, he would not be as efficient.

What's this leading up to? Well, it's leading up to the fact that efficiency stats currently state that Yogi Ferrell is the most efficient major contributor in the Big 10. Major contributor is defined as having a usage rate of at least 24%. Here's the top 5 with their efficiency rating on offense:

1. Yogi Ferrell 116.9

2. Adreian Payne 116.7

3. Andre Hollins 112.8

4. Tim Frazier 112.1

5. Gary Harris 111.1

So, congrats to Yogi. Here's to hoping he keeps it up and improves from here. For fun, the top 10 for the last 5 years:

2011 Jordan Taylor 126.9
2012 Cody Zeller 126.8
2013 Trey Burke 121.2
2011 Jared Sullinger 120.4
2013 Cody Zeller 119.4
2010 Jon Leuer 118.5
2012 Jared Sullinger 117.7
2014 Yogi Ferrell 116.9
2012 Robbie Hummel 116.8
2014 Adreian Payne 116.7

The difference was Jordan Taylor was SO good. He was just annoying and decent.

Very true. It's hard keeping us on track though. We had a Sochi Problems thread end up being a large discussion on World War II, Columbus, and Jesus lol.

true point guards don't just grow on trees either so I'm really beginning to worry about him potentially leaving early

thanks for posting the info you did

He is 5'11, and has a horrible assist to TO ratio, he is not leaving early.

He could leave after next season. He would have to improve his shooting around the rim, and the assist/turnover issues. He'll never dramatically improve his size, but the most common way guys will work around size issues in the NBA is work on the efficiency of their hands on that end. That is something he needs to work on a lot

If this left u wondering if he would stay or go, that was my intention

Just curious(don't know if its too personal), is Yogi on the 'Dipo track; being able to graduate in 3 yrs?

If so, I believe he could get his undergrad and go to the NBA in '15. Regardless of opinion on the value of education, the '14 Draft is way too deep to say certainly that Yogi could get drafted in the 1st round (guaranteed contract).

I haven't posted for a long time but I can't sit back and let people blast Yogi's assist to turnover ratio anymore. The same people that criticize Yogi are the same people that complain of Tom Crean's offense. According to you guys the offense revolves around streetball one on ones at the end of a shot clock. And if you know anything about basketball then you would know after catching a pass making a move, among other things, will negate an assist being awarded. If so, then how is Yogi to get that high of a number of assist? You can't have it both ways, and so I would say Crean's offense is a big reason for a low assist number.

It's actually not so much Crean's offense. It's the inexperience of our wings. They do not yet have an understanding of spacing and movement. When and if they figure that out next season, Yogi will have more assists and fewer turnovers. Right now, he has to force the issue a bit too much.

It's actually very surprising that Yogi has the efficiency rating he has with the lack of help around him. That's kind of why I started this thread. Right now, most of our wings are below average in efficiency. Put Yogi with even average guys around him and you will see some really great things.

Also, pay no mind to Charlie. He's negative about everything.
