Scouting a potential Crean replacement

Recommended Posts

Hey, I got about 3 inches of snow and ice outside, its raining now and I'm sitting inside with a cold. All cool with the speculative discussion here! Agree though, I just don't think anything is, or should be changing in the head coaching job at IU at this time. I'm not sure that we have very many here who are wanting a Indiana guy in the job though, as all the posts mentioning possibilities have struck me as negative to the idea, tongue in cheek, or just purely for the sake of discussion. I might be wrong on that.

Yeah, I don't care if it's an "Indiana guy".  I don't really see any out there that I'd feel comfortable with as coach:  Alford no, Cheaney doesn't have much coaching experience, Fife needs more seasoning, Crews is 60.  Stevens would be at the very top of the list, but he's in the NBA now and the timing may never work out.

Don't get rid of Crean yet.

However my list would consist of:

Brad Stevens
Tim Miles

However, I'm pretty sure the first wouldn't be available and the second wouldn't accept.

Yea I personally don't care where our coach is from as long as he can coach. I was just throwing ideas out for discussion as you had thought.

The only one I like is Jim crews. I'll pass on the other guys.

He's an uninspiring candidate, but as a caretaker for a few years until someone better is available he would be an OK option.

This year isn't the year to get Stevens but maybe after year two. The constant travelling and 4x games compared to college combined with not getting to watch his kids grow up may convince him to want to get back into the college ranks. Plus, moving his wife out of her comfort zone where friends and family are a long way away may prove to be the turning point. You also have to look at coaches who have not been successful in the pros but come back into college to find they haven't lost much. In football you have Spurrier here in SC plus Saban in AL. Pitino and Calipari are the obvious ones in basketball and also Larry Brown. Waiting an additional year also gives you time to evaluate the coaches you have zeroed in on now to see how they elevate or sustain the success. I don't believe Crean will be successful next year without Noah, but giving him another year will quiet the lone remaining fans who think he's the one.

Indiana will not get Brad Stevens anytime soon. Time to move on from that dream.

You have to identify the best possible candidates and he would be at the top of my list. In fact I have listed at least 3 and I don't remember you having any. Its so much easier to deny and deflect that this is a relevant discussion for Indiana fans and alumni than to contribute actual thought. Keep cheerleading though, because after Noah leaves thisyear both you and Crean can act just as surprised as our pathetic performance this year.

Sure, he may be a top possible candidate, but he will not be at Indiana anytime soon. Just move on from him.

I wasn't aware I was supposed to compile a list. I'll get right on that, boss.

Sean Miller, Gregg Marshall, Chris Collins.

Happy?

You think Stevens is a longshot but think Sean Miller would leave Arizona? Who's dreaming? At least Stevens has ties to the state and said IU was his dream job. Millers already turned us down. Agree on Marshall but you probably don't know anything about him other than last years final four. Collins doesn't even have a full year experience. You did answer my question, but it obviously shows your lack of not only basketball, but àlso what it takes to win. Age is a good excuse for you and both our current head coach. At least I buy it from you, boss.

Really isn't any reason for the personal attacks because someone disagrees with your opinion. Can we not be like some of the other IU forums that many of us left because of that very thing.

Only if Richard Sherman comes with him. We'd all love hear his comments immediately after games
