Scouting a potential Crean replacement

Recommended Posts

I don't have organized thoughts, because I am a maniac. Here is what's dribbling out of my ears from my brain right now:

-That buyout is ridiculous. WTF Fred?

- If you guys don't like Crean, you will HATE Josh Pastner. I think a few other people have already mentioned this. Pastner recruits very well and his teams always underachieve.

- I like the Jim Crews + Cheaney idea.

- Roll with Crean for the time being and hope Stevens washes out of the NBA? That could be a long, slow grind for a non-guaranteed payoff.

Please no former IU players. I understand the want and need for some to 'keep it in the family'. Possibly Dane Fife but that's a stretch at this point.

ah come on, I want this guy and his dad! ala Steve and Sam. Looks like they're doing some jedi mind tricks to win a game. I'm cool with that! I'll take any advantage I can get these days. Fire Crean! Bring back the Knights!

We would only be so lucky. Knight forgets more daily about basketball than what Crean will ever know. IU was also known for being the team you didn't want to play to now every mid major would love to play. Knight only cut down the nets after NCAA championships not after he lost at home only tying for a B1G champ. Plus rings were only given after championships not sweet 16s. Only 1 banner for a B1G champ was hung and it was for the fans. Crean hangs one for himself just like everything else he does. Knight would blame himself for poor efforts and not publicly embarrass his players yet Crean can't wait to blame collapses like last night on a for year 1000 point scorer who played a hell of a lot better than his coach acually did his job. Knight put IU in a bad light some days but I say Creans antics on the sidelines or after games is not much better. Knights players also graduated and were good human beings and role models. Knight also donated money for the library and did many things for people outside the limelight as he didn't want others knowing. When has Crean ever did something without trying to get attention for it? The missing girl comes to mind and Crean was front and center making sure everyone knew he was there. Sorry, but if you want to put down one of the greatest to ever sit on our sidelines you also must be comfortable with the clown we have now. Its time he got Creaned just like Abell, Roth, and Creek. I wouldn't let the tan man coach my fourth grader although his awesome cheerleading moves and frenetic pacing on the sidelines would be well suited for my daughters third grade cheerleading team. But his overall creepiness would probably keep him from being asked.

What, no Pat Knight suggestions?

He did get a positive result from this and these kids will probably remember this their whole life. Crean needs to tighten up if IU will ever return to what it once was.

Yeah, but I read on here this morning that Crean threw his players under the bus last night for saying they played like ****. Even saw a funny picture of it. Now you're saying Pat had a point when he did it and it worked? Does this mean that maybe CTC was using the same strategy?

hmmmmmmmmmm
You might be right. I don't know. I suppose it depends on how bad you think Crean is. If you think he is terrible, then certainly he could be replaced by someone who is at least not terrible. But, if you think he is good, just not good enough, then maybe there isn't anyone available who would be guaranteed to be better.

The problem is though, how long do you have to wait for someone to prove that he is the next great college basketball coach? And, once someone has already distinguished himself as that guy, is he going to want to come to IU? Will the NBA being sniffing around him or another big school?

Instead of waiting for the next great coach to emerge, it might be better to try to identify him before everyone else knows he's great. A lot of great coaches have emerged from almost nowhere. Coach K? One NIT berth at Army and losing records the last two seasons before being hired by Duke. Boeheim, Izzo and Williams were all longtime assistants.

There are probably a couple of great coaches out there we could get. We just need Fred Glass to identify them. It's very doubtful that a move is going to be made after this season. However, it is time for Glass to have his ear to the ground listening to what basketball insiders are saying about some of the lesser known young coaches and assistants.
One duke writer wrote about coach k in his first year or 2 in Durham and said "maybe this guy will be fired before I learn to spell his name"

Yes, probably so. I have nothing against Crean and think he is a good person. Lousy coach. What irks me is that the posters making fun of Knight believe their golden boy Crean is off limits. Knight has done more for the university than Crean will ever do. Yes, he was tough on his players as it was a different time with much different players. They and their parents wanted to play for Knight because they knew he would get the most out of them and also have to go to class. Plus, most of the posters who make fun of Knight never got to see him coach. What a thing of beauty it was . He worked the officials to get the calls we needed. His teams were always prepared and very rarely did they disappoint. Yet now we have a coach where very rarely are they prepared and underperforming is the norm. Knight was great to students which I know for a fact. His demise ultimately, but it doesn't change what he did for IU basketball or the university.

Michigan fans actually hate Beilein's offense. They have the same issues as far as not running much in the half court besides ball screens.

Michigan fans are dumb. Beilein has shown at both West Virginia and Michigan that if you give him a few years to build the program, he will produce one of the most efficient offenses in the country. I mean, Good Lord, Michigan was first in adjusted offensive efficiency last season. They are third this season without Burke, Hardaway Jr. and McGary.

Now, on defense, Beilein gets very mediocre results. Criticizing his offense shows a lack of basketball knowledge.

Just curious. A few IU posters get put down a little for wanting to discuss next year, but a lot of people are okay with discussing Crean's replacement already? I am just as upset and disappointed in Crean, but this isn't happening for at least a few more years. What will happen if we crush Purdue by 20 and then Coach Crean is a genius?

I think we all need to take a step back, breathe, and move on. Trust me, I'm just as frustrated as anyone, but to have 4 or 5 different threads about Coach is a little overkill. Just saying.

If we beat purdue by 30 that would b awesome! I would still b disappointed with crean because u cant make up for what has happened in one game. Lets remember we beat michigan and Wisconsin it raised optomism that we could b turning the corner and improving but there was still the same coaching mistakes that he has always made and they bite us at the wrong times. As for creans replacement I don't want one yet and cant think of a better guy to lead iu basketball if he would just put his ego aside and mayby b open to changing some of his coaching style he could still b ok

Sent from my SCH-I535 using BtownBanners mobile app

Pastner would be such an embarrassing hire

I really wish we had just hired Beilein instead of Sampson. Man we would have six titles by now

I think both suck, to be honest. Pastner is a worst coach than Crean. He is a recruiter. I will give him credit for having morals and sticking to them. As a coach, he is not that good. Beilein is the same in many people's eyes. Its funny, because even 10 years ago, you always heard about all of these good coaches. Now a coach is only good if he has made a Final Four in the last 5 years. I think if people who thought Crean is not a good coach looked at his record vs. Beilein, they wouldn't want Beilein.

No one will ever be good enough for Indiana unless his name is Bob Knight.

At least that's what I can gather.

That is ultimately what I was saying. People will never be happy with any coach we hire from here on out. A coach at IU must be able to recruit, get his kids to graduate at a high clip, and be a good game manager. We were spoiled by RMK tenure. If a coach wins a title here, then goes 10 years without a title, this fan base would probably want him gone. If we were in charge, Boeheim would not be the coach at Syracuse. Ah, the life of a fan. It is so much easier to build a Dynasty in a video game damn it.
