(2014) SF Josh Cunningham to Bradley

Recommended Posts

"Cunningham confirmed to Inside the Hall via text message early on Thursday morning that the Hoosiers extended an offer to join the 2014 recruiting class.

His performance came in the opening round of Chicago's public league playoffs as Morgan Park (15-5) crushed Dunbar, 105-28.

The No. 122 player nationally in his class according to the 247Composite, Cunningham is one of the best remaining players available for 2014 and has offers from Bradley, Creighton, DePaul, Oklahoma and South Carolina, among others.

"I'm still open to any school," Cunningham said via text.

The 6-foot-7 forward told Inside the Hall that he might make it down for one of IU's four remaining home games. He has one official visit available to take this spring. He's already taken official visits to Bradley, Creighton, Iowa State and Oklahoma."

An interesting story on him. Some good stuff in here.

"The last time Morgan Park stepped on the Proviso West floor, Josh Cunningham was the best player out there.

For the rest of the Class 3A championship season, the Mustangs were Billy Garrett's and Kyle Davis' team, but last Dec. 31, it was the 6-foot-7 Cunningham's 24 points and 16 rebounds that fueled an 82-57 rout of Proviso East in the Proviso West Tournament championship game.

It's easier for guards to dominate because they have the ball, and the success Garrett and Davis have enjoyed as freshmen at DePaul and Dayton, this season explains why Cunningham did not put up those numbers consistently last season.

The assumption was Cunningham would become the team's leader this season, and in many ways he is. He's skilled offensively, but he's still not Morgan Park's focal point.

He understands that just because he's the team's best player, he didn't need to alter his game.

"Not really," Cunningham said. "I don't have to try to take over. I depend on my teammates. Last year was individuals, and this year we can really score as a team."

What Cunningham has done well this season is rebound and compete, which are not mutually exclusive skills.

He was terrific on the boards last week as No. 6 Morgan Park split Red South games with No. 5 Bogan and No. 8 Simeon.

But he also barely scored in the second half of either game, which isn't a problem.

It's not a problem because Morgan Park is still bursting with talent. It's not a problem because junior guard Kain Harris can create his own shot or get to the foul line at will. It's not a problem because Morgan Park's featured player is as about as unselfish offensively as high-major Division I recruits come.

"One thing about Josh, he is not going to force his game," Morgan Park coach Nick Irvin said. "If you ask him to do something, he'll do it. The thing I always taught him is, 'Take your time and let the game come to you.'

"When you've got good guard play, you get overshadowed sometimes. I always tell him, 'Just do your job and you'll get noticed.' He had a good spring and summer, and he has opportunities. He's not pushing.""

Like several on here, I think we'll see a wing transfer after the season is done. It would not surprise me if it were two. Sounds like this kid fits the mold for what coach likes in the wing recruits. I find it interesting that we're shopping in the Chicago area. This is a market that has not been open to us. Has there been anyone wear the candy stripes since Isaiah? Maybe this recruit gets our foot in the door for others. Does Jabari have a little brother?

Worth noting that his school won 105-28 per ITH. Puts the performance more into perspective.

Looked up last year's EYBL stats for mac Irvin Fire.

Cunningham 12 pts/5 rebs per game averaging 24 minutes played. That was almost a year ago so maybe he has been a late bloomer.

In the Peach Jam (EYBL playoffs basically) he had 8.4 pts/game. Looks like he shoots free throws around 60% (26-43).

Fwiw, people believe Iowa State is a serious player in Cunningham's recruitment. 5-star Rashad Vaughn will announce at 6:30, tonight, and word is it is UNLV. Iowa St. thought they were in the best position.

Sounds like Iowa State coaches r leaking out Rashad Vaughn 's decision prior to his announcement. #Crystalball agrees http://bit.ly/1hjVfwh
