I think most “GM’s” in college work like a glorified scout for the head coach and probably helps advise on the pool of money. Just a guess, but I think Carr operates on a more co-equal plane. I feel like you might be there too if you think Dolson would try and retain Carr if Devries left. That’s more or less how it works in the NBA. It’s a close working relationship where each have distinct roles but they kind of overlap. We can find situations in the NBA where the GM rules supreme and ones where the coach does. But in general they operate kind of as co-equals where NBA GMs aren’t making big signings without consulting the coach (and sometimes the star player) and coaches aren’t getting pissed and just benching highly sought after players (with influential agents) without consulting the front office. My impression is most of these college GMs are a direct report to the coach. Dusty May could fire his GM tomorrow and the AD wouldn’t have any involvement besides the paperwork. My impression is Devries couldn’t do that to Carr without express approval of Dolson. FWIW, I didn’t question why it took so long, but the timing of hire. If they were going to hire someone from the NBA it would seem the summer after the Finals would’ve been the logical time vs in the middle of the college and NBA season. The latter makes me think they didn’t get it done this summer, but as the season went south they had to do something to pry Carr away. I join you and everyone else in being happy it got done. I have posted before that I think this will be the trend of the future. There might be a couple highly successful HCs who feel they can keep dominion over both operations but at the pro level very few are successful at both. Jeff Flabjohns and skhoosier2 2 Quote

Seems like a mature, effective, grown-@$$ man move to me. Whenever I see comments like "we had to get a GM", it reminds me of all the old heads saying things like "well, Bobby didn't need someone to bring in players for him." I'm actually kind of impressed we got on the GM bandwagon as fast as we did, because for years that's been the kind of thing we have to watch everyone else have success with before we even consider it. The same type of people who say we need to run more "motion". I don't even think they really know what that means, it just some sort of mantra. Quote
