Purdue being preseason number 1 is the reason why no one takes the B1G seriously come March.   No fault of Purdue but if they are you conferences preseason #1 team then the conference isn’t going to be strong.  Going on 25 year drought for the B1G winning it all.    B1G needs more talent.   Smith and Loyer are getting love because they will be 3 year starters for the number 1 team in the conference over the last 3 years and Painter is finally getting his flowers in the media over his last couple years of success  Purdue hasn’t lost a non conference game outside the NCAA tourney in 3 years.  Probably won’t be a national title contender but definitely will compete for the B1G.

True. That’s largely our fault. Purdue can’t/shouldn’t be recruiting that type of talent. Neither can NW, Wisconsin, etc…not consistently anyways. IU can. We’re the standard bearer of the conf and have been MIA for 30 yrs. To a lesser extent OSU, UM and MSU need to be good but they have been off and on at least during that stretch.

At least we have UCLA to help represent the conference now. They’re the other read headed step child of the blue bloods but at least they have moments of competence here and there.

I actually think IU and UCLA are the two best teams with the best opportunity to play the 2nd weekend and possibly the elite 8!

BINGO!!!

Braden Smith preseason conference POY? ... he looks like he's 14 (regardless of the grungy facial hair).

hard to take our conference seriously

I mean he's quite possibly the best point guard in the nation. but he's proven people on this board won't his freshman and sophomore year. he's just one of those dudes who exceed expectations. And in a guards game, Purdue happens to have the best point guard, best coach and lead by veterans.

And this season we could easily see a regression. Kinda like when it's time to take the pacifier away from a toddler.

Braden loses his binky this season. We'll see how it goes.

He's got a lot to prove but it shouldn't come as a surprise to see him and Purdue projected to be #1. Everyone else has even more questions than Purdue.

Exactly. You are number one until someone takes it away from you. Hopefully, this is the year that we take it away from them.

They’ve got a total of two guys that averaged over 20mpg on their roster, and three total guys that have played over 10 mpg in college basketball.

They may be led by two veterans, but their roster won’t have minutes given to many veterans.

Braden Smith a solid point guard.

Calling him possibly the best point guard in the nation is beyond hyperbole even for you, though.

And one those guys played 30 minutes in the title game where the Boilers were begging to get even a few points from anyone not named Edey and gave them 0 points.

No he isn’t but I see why some may think that because he had one of the easiest outlets in college basketball history and I guarantee you 5 of his assists per game went to Edey.  Heck, even my 5’ 8” frame can heave up to Edey and get a few assists out of it!  I bet his Assists go down 50% or more.  He will be lucky to average 2.5-3 per game and his points per game may take a hit too, along with Loyer’s, because they won’t have the 7’4” Jolly Green Giant commanding double and triple teams!

That is true. Minutes wise they may not be vets. but TKR has now been in the system for 2 years. Colvin and Heide for a year. Furst for 3. Purdue is still going to be a Top 15. They have questions. But so does everyone else.

I don't think they'll be leaning on Loyer for scoring. Just to spread the floor. It'll be Smith and TKR. Though I think Jacobsen could be their surprise guy or Heide.

I think more so than us!  Our biggest question is chemistry and 3 point shooting, IMO.

We have the guys that can contain Smith. Gallo, and the new guys have the length, strength and athleticism to neutralize whatever he does.

Smellermakers may make the top third of the conference, but no way they are the best team

Chemistry, 3 point shooting and coaching. Does Woodson have the ability to get a team to 15, 16, 17 conference wins?

Agree, I think coaching was a given but didn’t mention because it can be sensitive subject around here!
