Shai was drafted 11th and is now averaging 30 ppg in OKC. Similar size and game. Every draft year is different, it depends on the overall talent level and what teams are drafting and where. And while JHS played amazing, he lived off a bunch of shots—mid range jumpers—most NBA teams don’t care about. What impresses all is how well JHS picked apart the defense. He read it like a pro. And, yes, even NBA scouts are abuzz about JHS's performance. To compare him to Justin Smith is totally absurd. HoosierHoopster 1 Quote

If you’re stubborn like Painter and drop back he’ll hit that nice mid range jumper all day. Zero nba teams play defense like that. When you blitz or trap him, he backs up every time. That’s a big thing to work on. NBA teams will want to see him split the double or use exceptional athleticism to turn the corner on the outside man. Nobody is saying he can’t play at the next level; we’re just discussing how high a team will want to draft him this year. A lot of that will be based on athleticism not midrange shooting at the college level. Quote

He's quick on/with the ball, his lateral movement, quick 'twitch' and running the floor speed is good, his D is usually strong, and he's a big, strong point or combo-guard. He's athletically in good position for the next level. Quote

Those are the primary reasons he wasn’t high on draft boards to begin with. Some nice performances are pushing him up. If he can find a way to score, even without being a good player, some team will pay him. Deangelo Russell is a good example. Pretty bad team player, but can put up stats 1v1 so he’ll always cash a check from some dumb NBA team. Dlo isn’ta bad comp, actually. Similar size and not a great athlete although I’d say probably a touch more athletic than JHS. He put up 19-6-5 as an all American and went 2nd in a decent draft after his freshman year. JHS isn’t having the year Dlo did, but I like his mentality better. Quote
