Since this thread has evolved into….whatever this is, it seems like as good a place as any to point out that Chris Beard, he of the final game appearance, elite reputation and massive UT resources, currently has no commitments to his ‘23 class.

Chris Beards mama didn’t give him any lunch money? Or did Kevin Willard (LOL) steal his too?

How many 23s did he target?  The man clearly loves the transfer portal. Also haven’t looked at returning roster.   Beard loves TP.  Let’s see this one out.

Can we do the same for the coach at IU, as well?

Of course.  But I know how many the staff targeted and missed. (Transfer portal was not plan A for staff) thankfully it’s a great fallback option.  I’ve stated, I expect and hope transfer portal is huge for us.  We need it to be.

We are currently 27th nationally and 6th in the B1G in the 247 composite team recruiting rankings for the 2023 class. Rivals has us 21st.

In both services we are currently ahead of UNC, Gonzaga, UVA, Bama, Auburn, Arizona, and a couple hundred teams that have zero ranked recruits, including Texas.

And yes, I know we have more to replace than many of the teams we are ahead of - we will need those spots to be filled by (especially and primarily) our top ten 2022 class, the portal, and perhaps more 2023 recruits.

29 offers

7 visits if you go by 247

IU 20 offers and 5 visits if you go by 247

Ok.  6 visits since September.  1 has committed elsewhere. 5 are uncommitted.  Doesn’t look great for Texas either. So we found another successful coach that is maybe struggling to recruit.  Still 5 uncommitted targets who visited and clearly the guy loves the transfer portal.

I care about Indiana’s success.  I’d like to see Beard struggle. So hopefully he keeps whiffing.

I just answered the question and for the record I wouldn’t consider that struggling for Texas either I would just call it part of recruiting.   Unless you are Duke or Kentucky your program is going to hear no more then yes.   Especially if you are recruiting higher rated kids.    Self made the quote famous but it’s true.    IU could of recruiter lower rated kids and heard the word yes if they wanted to this cycle but they chose to go after better talent.   Hasn’t worked out for them yet but better then offering kids that they know and more importantly for this board the fans know are not good enough for IU if IU wants to get back to the level the fans want.     If IU would of taken a commitment for Dunlap and Robert’s would people on here of been happy with that 4 man recruiting class?  Don’t even need to ask that question on here.

Why do you act like we have no recruits for the 23 class. Both Newton and Cupps are top 100 players and should be good contributors in their time at IU.  To me Cupps is a player like Aaron Craft but with a better shot.  I really think Newton will be very good and if he wasn't injured during the suer he would be ranked a lot higher.

I agree with you. Transfer portal gold.  But the competition will be stiff.  Im excited to see how the staff tries to handle the situation.  I guess I need to reset my expectations for a bit of a rebuild season next year. I just hate to see momentum lost.  I’ve watched it happen too many times before. It’s going to be a stiff battle.

It will only be a rebuild if JHS and Bates leave

Goodness, I’ve stated my opinion many times on that. I like those guys. They will likely be good program building recruits. They don’t even marginally begin to replace what we are losing in position, size, or skill.  I’m on record liking both of them as career guys.  But they both will likely be down the depth chart.

Well if Bates or JHS leaves them those two will be a need. Page wouldn't have came in and replaced Race or TJD and is why I keep saying it is the returning players are the key and not recruits.  Reneau was a top 30 player and Duncomb was a top 70 player and those two will play the 5 and maybe Reneau can play some 4. To me Banks will be a good stretch 4 and we still will have Geronimo.  I just don't get why you are freaking out so much about something that is over a year away.

Bates was really not great last season. He could make big improvements this season but we’re firmly in “wait and see” mode right now regarding him.

Cupps and Newton are good players to round out a class. Not the only two guys in a class that has huge holes to fill.

Only reason I say Bates is that if he has a breakout year height ho because he has a baby to worry about

It will be interesting to see how IU does in the transfer portal this year when it actually has the roster space to compete for some of the bigger name portal kids.   Playing time one of the biggest factors for the portal kids.  Trayce and race coming back by default took them out of the running for some of those top level bigs that were in the portal.    IU wanted to add another shooter last year but honestly they didn’t have the space.  They said they had a plan in place for that but from the outside looking in they had no room.   If IU has a big time year then they should look like a really good landing spot.   Going to be fun to follow

Agreed.  Should have a lot to sell/buy (haha).

everyone including me expects the portal to be very full this season.  But I’ve also heard a lot of coaches desire this process over freshman. So a lot of competition.

Won’t have to worry about izzo on this one.  He just had a big rant about where are kids loyalty to the schools.   Talking about not using the portal but has 2 transfers on his current team I believe
