Class of '66 Old Fart

(2023) - PG Gabe Cupps to INDIANA

Recommended Posts

Positives-team player, shot maker, winner, nice passer, adequate ball handler.

Negatives-frame and height. He’s tiny. Listed anywhere from 5’10-6’2”. Watched the state finals game. He’s small. Defense. Blown by often. Will have major problems finishing at rim at college level.

Idk. Not everyone needs to be ready to go year 1. And teams have 13 spots for a reason.

He's 6'2 or 6'3 and hasn't really started putting on muscle yet. He won't be that small by the time he gets to college. He's a 4 year guy that might not play a ton as a freshman but he could be a really good player by years 3 and 4.

Fully understand.  We know Crean could fall in love with a player because of the way he combed his hair.  Really not sure what attracted Archie to given players but with the staff we currently have I believe there's a clear road map and if they want Cupps that's enough to satisfy me until it proves otherwise.

This is just a thought I had while reading your post.  Not argumentative, but what would we think if IU was recruiting Steve Alford today as a junior in high school.  Could he be successful with the way the game is played now?  Do Cupp and Alford have similar game traits?  Obviously Cupp isn't Alford.   :))

Cupp is a different type player than Alford. Cupp is closer to Aaron Craft. That's the best comparison imo

And surely there's a place for all three in today's college game.

SMH      :(

Cupps? Not very physical, neither as a defender nor near the rim. Not a plus defender. Nice looking jump shot, though the numbers aren't super high yet. Shifty with ball. Really likeable as a teammate. Will need a year or three to develop enough athleticism to succeed.

Y'all decide the better comp for that:

  1. Aaron Craft -- B1G defensive player of the year who couldn't hit an unguarded jumper, or
  2. Verdell Jones III (btw .. that is not a knock -- I was always a Verdell fan - senior Verdell was quite good on a top 20 team)

He’s a better shooter than Craft and not new nearly as physical as craft on defense.  Crafts calling card was defense.

Cupp obviously projects well, based on his offers.  I’m not too worried. We will have plenty of guards over the next few years, and the best ones will play.

I bet Gabe Cupps is a real effort guy. First in last out. Coach’s son. Realllll high basketball IQ. Just gets the game. That Jimmy Chitwood type. Sneaky athletic! Glue guy. Student of the game. Understands the living s**t out of angles.

The kind of guy you want as your quarterback, though something about him makes me wonder whether he'd be a good runner.

Maybe it's because I can't picture Aaron Craft as a running quarterback either. Penix, though!

If Gabe Cupps was a QB you’d have to wonder if he could take the beating he’d take in the B1G without any mobility. Too bad he’d have to sacrifice accuracy and football IQ to gain some athleticism.

For anyone looking to watch a Cupps game, this one has the added bonus of being Logan Duncomb’s last HS game. Small sample size rules apply, but a couple of thoughts: 1) I’d love to see his measurements, but I’m confident he has plus length. 2) He’s no Jakai Newton, very few are, but he’s a solid athlete. He moves well laterally. He changes direction easily. He has a quick little gear change. 3) He plays within their structure, almost to a fault. He takes a couple of open baseline drives, but otherwise he is hyper-disciplined playing within the offense. As a result, he doesn’t really create much, though his vision is clearly plus.  Will be really interesting to see how much more assertive he gets as he matures. 4) Don’t really have a comp for him off of a single viewing, but the comps I’ve seen in a few  places strike me as pretty far off. He seemed more in the vein of the Jay Wright Arcidiacono/Brunson/Gillespie PG lineage of super efficient, versatile kids who can play on or off the ball.

Aside: Duncomb was the best player on the floor, Centerville had no matchup for him, and it was coaching malpractice that he didn’t get a touch every trip. If they play through him they win this game.

For us old guys he sounds like a bigger version of Jay Burson of OSU
