NCAA MBB Transfer Portal

Recommended Posts

.

Jose Perez (West Virginia) enters the portal.  Colorful background:

2018-9 and 2019-20 at Gardner-Webb, averaging 15 points, 6 reb, and 3.5 assists over two seasons.

Transferred to Marquette for the 20-21 season under his one time free transfer.  Playing in only 10 games (11 minutes/game) due to injury, playing mostly from February on.  Averaged 3.1 points/game.

Took advantage of the one-time waiver free transfer for the 21-22 season and transferred to Manhattan.  Averaged 18.9 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 4.5 points.

Two weeks before the 22-23 season  (October 25) was to begin at Manhattan, Manhattan's coach was fired.  Perez transferred to West Virginia at semester and the NCAA denied his appeal to play the rest of the year.

So this will mark his sixth year (although he didn't play last season).

Pluses:  good size (6'5") and a good distributor.

Minuses:  very ball dominant and not a great shooter (40/30/75 for his career and not a bulk three point shooter)

Michigan rumored to be heavily involved early in this one

Considering how much they wanted Caleb Love and likely would have given him tons of freedom, Perez would seem to be a match.  Michigan doesn't exactly look for efficient shooters but loves athletes at the guard and wing positions.

Were they over signed and someone had to go? Bizarre, he was already listed on their athletics page.

With Mgbako, I don’t feel like we need Ledlum. Do we kick the tires anyways?

I doubt it.

Do they play the same position?  I thought Ledlum was a shooting guard!

Ledlum is a 3/4

Yes.  Probably better suited for the 4 but IU recruited him as the 3.

It's getting pretty ridiculous right now at St. John's....they already had 14 'scholarship' players, so one is officially going to be a walk on already unless someone transfers.  If Ledlum comes, that's two.  And there is a huge logjjam for playing time, not surprisingly:

  • Dingle, Harvard transfer, G.  Averaged 23.4 ppg at Penn last year.
  • Soriano.  entire career at St. John's.  Center.   15 pts/ 12 reb.
  • Jenkins, Iona transfer, G. Averaged 15 1/2 pts and 5 assists there.
  • Taylor Jr, Oregon St transfer,  SF.  Averaged 11.6 pts and 3.7 reb
  • Slazinski, Iona transfer (previously at Louisville before that).  Injured last year.  Year before.  Stretch PF.  Averaged 11.3 pts and 5.7 reb at Iona last year before getting injured.
  • Alleyne:  U Conn combo guard transfer.  Three point specialist, didn't shoot well there last year but is 37% for his career
  • Wilcher, freshman combo guard.  ranked 46th by 247, decommitted from UNC
  • Elikofor, PF/C.  Kansas transfer, played sparingly.
  • Luis, U Mass transfer.  6'6 wing.  11.5 pts at UMass last season
  • Davis, Iona transfer.  6'3" guard.   Averaged 6.5 points at Iona last year but was just a freshman.
  • Brady Dunlap, F, 6'7" freshman.  Decommitted from Notre Dame
  • Sean Conway, 6'5" wing.  VMI transfer.  12 points, 4.9 reb, three point specialist
  • Drissa Traore:  6'8" PF/C.  Only he and Soriano were retained from the previous team.  Played very little as a freshman.
  • Ayo, 6'7" F.  Iona transfer.  Played just 10 minutes per game and averaged 2.6 points, but was just a freshman.

So by my account:

Guards:  Dingle, Jenkins, Alleyne, Wilcher,  Davis

SF: Taylor Jr, ,Luis (SF/SG), Dunlap, Conway (SF/SG), Ayo (SF)

PF  Slazinski, Ejikfor (PF/C), Traore (PF/C)

C:  Soriano,

Good depth but I sure as hell don't see how that is going to be a healthy locker room.  Only two retained players and tons of guys playing their last year of college ball without enough court time to go around.  If they add Ledlum, I have to think that at least one moves on.
