Trilly hinting at about a handful of August grad transfers.

It's just crazy..felt like ten years ago your roster was pretty much set by May. I remember when Wiggins was in high school and committed to Kansas in May feeling how late that was..Now, it might be August when your roster is set. I do hope the staff can add a reliable shooter, even if it's a role player like a Zeisloft. Just not confident in CJ Gunn being the backup 2.

Not confident CJ Gunn is the back up 2.

Ithiel Horton (6'5" guard, UCF) enters the portal.  This will be his third transfer (I'm assuming this is a grad transfer).

  • Played his freshman year (2018-19) at Delaware.  All-freshman CAA team, averaged 13.2 points, 3.1 reb, 1.6 assists on 43/41/79 shooting.
  • Sat out 2019-20 as he transferred to Pittsburgh.
  • Spent 2020-21 and 2021-22 at Pittsburgh.  Spent half the season in 21-22 on suspension due to an incident that involved a drunken disorderly and assault chargers.  In his two years at Pitt, he averaged 9.3 ppg, 2.5 reb, and 1.5 assists, shooting 37/38/80.
  • Transferred in 2022-23 to UCF, averaging 12.3 points, 3.7 reb, and 1.6 assists, shooting 38/35/83.

Bulk three point shooting, over his career has averaged 38% from three taking 6 per game.  Overall three year shooting is 39/38/81.

Gotta think we'd at least reach out. I wonder if he and Xavier still communicate?

I'm feeling pretty sure that unless there is some big fish grad transfer out there noticeably better than Gunn/Galloway, the staff is rolling with 12.   With Newton's knee health, and Cupps being a freshman I'd like to have another guard piece but It's hard to sell a guy to be a back up and then push others with like-talent.

I would doubt Newton's knee is much of a worry.

Lots of players still in the portal quite a bit better than Gunn, I doubt many are better/more useful for what we need than TG, though.

I think the biggest issue right now is injury protection after Galloway and X.  If either goes down IU would need big minutes from an inexperienced player.

I HOPE Jakai's knee is not an issue. If it's not I think he will be in the rotation. Still think he's a top 50 kid if he doesn't get hurt.

On the second part I agree. It's not happening but even though Reeves would have started here and is a much much better scorer than Trey, I think Trey's all around game is much better than Reeves.

I would tend to take our lack of an additional guard as a sign that the staff thinks that between Gunn, Newton, and Cupps we have some real options.

I do not think we are putting together a roster with any concern about hurting the feelings of players who are not up to the task.
