Sadly ol Snopes’ independence may not be what it once was.

I certainly have no proof the claims are untrue. But the daily mail is a national enquirer basically.

Yeah but the article I posted was from Forbes and while they discounted daily mails independence as well they to came away with some concerns.

I stopped reading the op ed at this point:

. Of particular interest, when pressed about claims by the Daily Mail that at least one Snopes employee has actually run for political office and that this presents at the very least the appearance of potential bias in Snopes’ fact checks, David responded “It’s pretty much a given that anyone who has ever run for (or held) a political office did so under some form of party affiliation and said something critical about their opponent(s) and/or other politicians at some point. Does that mean anyone who has ever run for office is manifestly unsuited to be associated with a fact-checking endeavor, in any capacity?”

That is actually a fascinating response to come from a fact checking organization that prides itself on its claimed neutrality. Think about it this way – what if there was a fact checking organization whose fact checkers were all drawn from the ranks of Breitbart and Infowars?

===============================================================================

Seriously....the analogy is that if you ever ran for a political office (which I find funny that the writer doesn't mention what political office it was......i.e., does running for a local city council somehow destroy your credibility as a fact checker? -- to hiring writers from known of fictional news?

Whole thing reads like a gossip column. With no proof or evidence. Just suspicion and open ended questions.

You also have to keep in mind that snopes at its base was not formed to be specifically a political fact checking forum.  At its beginning, it was meant to weed out urban internet myths.  Its fact checking became increasingly focused on politics because of the amount of politically based fictions being passed around.

I wonder what Washington, Jefferson, etc. al. did without snopes.  :)

Why don't you just post it?  Snope, don't snipe.

Asking for a friend.

I already had posted it, I just wanted some confirmation that it was, and still is, a legitimate way of finding something resembling the truth.

The person I was arguing with was complaining about how the governor of Michigan is a disgrace because she banned the sale of American flags. I posted an article from Snopes which tore that post to shreds, and all that person has done is say Snopes isn't accurate anymore.

To most people if something disagrees with their preconceived notion it’s for that reason unreliable.

What she is doing in Michigan seems to me to be very similar to what many/most governors from both parties are doing.

Not seeing any real policy differences between her and most others, or any real reason to be especially angry or especially excited about her actions.

Edit: I just looked it up: in fact, she’s part of a seven state coalition of governors in the Midwest, including Indiana that are following a joint plan to reopen.

Gotcha.  I misread and thought you were saying someone here had copied something from another board on to this board is that was minsinformation.

Bottom line, I don't think there is any site that does a better job of fact checking that Snopes.  Part of the reason is that they don't much with statements of opinion like politifact or some other sites out there do and mostly stick with statements that people are citing as fact.  But by and large, they are not simply a political fact checking site.  The articles on today's front page of snopes are basically apolitical:

Fact check:  Is USPS Closing Soon Because of Covid-19?

Fact check:  Is Starbucks Opening a Roasting Facility in China?

Fact check:  Is this Pavarotti's Daughter Singing?

Fact check:  US Intel:  Is Coronavirus Man Made?

Fact check:  Is White House Gift Shop Selling Coronvirus Commemorative Coins?

Fact check:  Did This Nobel Prize Winner Say Covid-19 Was Created in a Lab?

There are non-fact check stories that are news stories are fact based ones that are a mix -- some on politics (but not op ed), some not.

Not to mention that Michigan has the highest case and death rate in the Midwest......what would you expect her to do?

The real difference is that the michigan militia wanted to get out and stretch their guns.

Not sure it warrants the protests but she banned some odd things. Some big box stores could sell some things but in the same store they had to rope off gardening, paint and other home repair stuff. Also would not let you leave and go to a second home like a lake home if you had it. I have not seen other states do that and that is kind of hard to explain.
