Tracy Smith struggling at ASU

Recommended Posts

The Sun Devil's 54 year streak of 30 or more wins came to an end this season. His team has also been shut-out a school record five times this year. Their fans are about done with him. I don't see him lasting much longer there.

Almost reminds me a bit of Rich Rod. He was at his alma mater (I know IU isn't Tracy Smith's alma mater, but it's the No. 1 state school in his home state) and things apparently were going swimmingly. Then he was too tempted by the the bright lights and big city (so to speak) at Michigan. That didn't work out so well.

Would take him back in a heartbeat but I doubt Glass is willing to admit that Lemonis is struggling.

Not saying Lemonis can't be the guy. But all indications to me scream he needs to go back to being an assistant.

Just saying that his 2017 class is loaded with talent mostly from Indiana. Not to mention he already has some pretty strong commits in the 18 and 19 classes as well.

And he looks incapable on capitalizing on that talent

Smith's Sun Devils are 5-5 to start the season. Barring a miraculous turnaround, I'd say he's done after this year.

Obviously thankful for the foundation he set with our program, but Lemonis is looking like he's got the ship sailing full steam ahead just fine at this point.

No kidding. This thread is like the twilight zone.

”Hey let’s fire a guy who has us ranked and likely headed to yet another NCAA tournament and hire a guy who’s about to get canned at a traditional power with more resources!”

And yeah I know when this thread was started, but geez.

Tracy Smith would kill it here if he came back. A very similar example is Green Bay women's basketball which kills it at a lower level. Their coach was a guy named Kevin Borseth who went to Michigan and completely failed and made headlines for a press conference where he blew up (Smith obviously has not done that but team has struggled similarly). Borseth then went back to Green bay where he has resumed dominating. If Smith came back something similar would happen.

I am not advocating getting rid of Lemonis but if things go south or Lemonis leaves for another job, Smith is at the top of my list for a replacement. Smith at least here was a more complete coach and did it all (managed well in game, developed talent and recruited top notch). Lemonis has done most of that except his player development is not quite as good. Right now change is not needed but if anything changes Smith should absolutely come back.

For those still marginally interested, Smith's Sun Devil's are now 12-14 on the season. He is getting chewed apart by their fan base, and his teams' performances thus far have been putrid by ASU standards. It's looking like the Rich Rodriguez era of Michigan football in regards to "first time in ___ years that the team failed to ___" criticisms. Just really looking like a bad fit at this point, and there is very little doubt he will be let go after/during this season.

It's a shame because the guy can coach, but it is a really bad fit for him there. Having said that, IU baseball looks to be in very solid hands right now with Lemonis.

Lol despite him being a horrible coach no complaints allowed. Lol silly logic.

He wasn't a horrible coach... and none of us on here have the qualifications to have complaints about D1 head coaches. So, I'll continue being a fan and actually enjoying my favorite universities' sports teams.

I don't follow baseball as much but could you make a case that Smith benefited from a class of overachievers? Like Crean had when he coupled Cody, Yogi with Oladipo and a strong core of Hulls, CWat and Will maybe Smith benefited from the Scwarb, Travis group and made his coaching look better
