Former Indiana guard helps Long Island to upset of Fort WayneYogi Ferrell

Yogi Ferrell scores 16 in Nets win

Long Island earned perhaps its most impressive victory of the 2016-17 NBA D-League season thus far Friday, as it stunned Fort Wayne 118-113 in front of 2,508 fans at Memorial Coliseum.

The Nets (4-11) came in to the game in fifth place out of six Atlantic Division teams, while the Mad Ants (9-3) were in first place in the Central Division. However, Long Island made plays down the stretch to stretch a fourth quarter tie into a win.

The Nets got double-figure scoring from five players, including 16 points from former Indiana University star Yogi Ferrell.

Ferrell hit 6 of 13 shots, including both 3-pointers and also dished out five assists and made three steals. He did toss away four turnovers, however.

He was joined by teammates Trahson Burrell (21 points, 10 rebounds, five assists), Mike Scott (23 points), Chris McCullough (14 points, nine rebounds), and Donnie McGrath (12 points, six assists) in contributing to the upset.

Fort Wayne rallied in the second quarter to tie the game and remained tied into the final period. The Mad Ants were paced by forward Alex Poythress, who scored a game-high 32 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.

Indiana Pacer forward Rakeem Christmas finished with 10 points in 24 minutes, but was minus-12 in the plus/minus category.

Travis Leslie added 21 points for Fort Wayne, while University of Indianapolis product Jordan Loyd had 16 and Trey McKinney-Jones 12.

Long Island shot 45 percent from 3-point range, while the Mad Ants managed to sink just 8 of 31 (26 percent) from long range. That helped the Nets overcome eight missed free throws.

Following a 6-1 start to the season, Fort Wayne is just .500 in its last six games.

The Mad Ants will host Greensboro Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the coliseum.

Yogi Ferrell stars in Long Island loss at D-League Showcase

http://www.netsdaily.com/2017/1/22/14350162/yogi-ferrell-stars-in-long-island-loss-at-d-league-showcase

With the D-League Showcase in suburban Toronto over, expect NBA teams to start offering 10-day deals to the best performers over the four-day, league-wide event.

Yogi Ferrell, who became a free agent when the Nets waived him in favor of Spencer Dinwiddie, made his case for a call-up Saturday when he scored 27 points and handed out nine assists in Long Island’s 122-117 loss to Grand Rapids. It was a back-and-forth game with the Drive having the upper hand most of the way.

Ferrell finished with a 7-of-14 performance, including a stellar 6-of-10 from deep and a perfect night at the foul line. Ferrell was one of three players with NBA experience who scored more than 20 for the young Nets. Carrick Felix, the 6’6” small forward finished with 21 (7-of-15, 4-of-8). Lazar Hayward, another 6’6” swing man, also had 21 (9-of-15, 0-of-3) and grabbed eight boards.
