New Coach Salary And Criteria...$5 million?

Recommended Posts

I had heard during all the rumblings end of last season that IU was willing to offer North of 5 million. Not sure if true though as nothing panned out. Source seemed legitimate.

I would think $5 million should be the minimum base salary. Add in bonuses, camps, etc. if they can go up on the base salary then that's even better for the prospects of getting a true elite coach. Offer Brad Stevens $5...no...how about $6....no..... How about $7. Basically make it happen if it's financially feasible.

It's a nice pay bump. It also happens to be almost exactly the Harbaugh deal. 3.5 to 5.

I'd also support a slightly lower base for massive achievement bonuses. Tony Bennett only makes like 2 million plus up to like 2 more in bonuses I think. I'd support 4 base + up to 2 or 2.5. If you don't win then you don't earn.

I actually think Harbaugh is a good comparison.  Someone who coached successfully in the pros, but came back o college because he got his dream job.   I have no idea if he still feels this way or not, but at one time, Indiana was Brad Stevens' dream job.  So I have hope.

He is a one man list until he isn't.  As I've said before, every move Indiana makes should depend on whether or not he would come if the job were available.  He says he will, we act appropriately.  Crean finishes the season, we wait until April 10th or so to let him walk, see what the Celtics do in the post-season, and hire Brad when we can. And I'd give him $8 million a year for 10 years.  At the end of the day, that's chump change if Indiana wins like I think they would under him.  Meaning, he's worth far more than that to re-build the brand.

He says no?  Then we move on to other options, and both Miller and Marshall are good ones.  I don't know that Sean Miller leaves Arizona for Indiana, though.  I wouldn't mind taking a shot at a Keith Smart or Randy Wittman.  I do know we need someone who understands what Indiana basketball is all about; and though I know some disagree, it is NOT spending $700k on recruiting so we can go get east coast guys who do NOT understand.    We need at least one "IU guy" involved at a high level, or we risk repeating the last 15 years.   That's my two cents.

If we were paying Gregg Popovich money, why not just get Gregg Popovich?

gregg popovich is a great basketball mind and leader but is a mystery at the college level. Basketball would translate but what about recruiting? Big if

Is recruiting really that scary? Everyone always says that we just need a basketball mind for a coach and he can just recruit the state and build a team.

I am all for Stevens, we should do all we can to get him. But, I believe he will be with the Celtics for the length of his contract, if no longer. We have to have other options. And, I do not care for Randy Wittman. His career winning pct is .396.

Great basketball mind really undersells him. And he has some D3 coaching experience. He built a winning program out of absolutely nothing.

And when he knew he could do better he took a season off to be an assistant coach to refine his skills. So he's willing to learn at least.

Plus he's an Indiana native!

But, is there anything that makes you think he couldn't recruit or just not having seen him recruit? What player in their right mind wouldn't go play for him?

I mean, don't get it twisted. There is NO way he is going to be our coach in any timeline. But, if he was he would be hanging banners at the end of his second season.
