IU vs that school in ohio...

Recommended Posts

ESPN owns ABC I believe (or vice versa).

Yeah, I knew the Disney connection and everything. But, they're super different networks. ABC is over-the-air (or whatever, does OTA still exist?) and ESPN is non-basic cable. I don't get ESPN but I do get ABC.

So, do you run your ESPN game day on ESPN then kick over to ABC? It just seems like a weird arrangement when you can't pull your game over to ESPN with Game Day. And, I doubt they would pull a big marquee game to a lower viewership network.

Yeah you're right about being the laughingstock of the Big Ten for years but I think most people believe the tides are turning under Wilson and the program is heading in the right direction. I think if it's a complete blowout (ala Wisconsin hanging 83 points on us in 2010), all the improvement talk goes out the window and reminds everyone of just how bad the program is. But the reward is also equally as high. I think either way, it's a high risk/high reward scenario.

I think most will judge IU's improvement based on the whole season, not based on a big loss to #1. However, a win, or a very competitive game could do a lot to help perception.

Afternoon games on ABC also air on ESPN2. Depends on where you are. ABC uses the ESPN graphics for games. More people get ABC than ESPN, but it doesn't matter because it's the same company.

And anyway, Gameday just goes where the good story is. They go up to ND constantly, but every ND home game is on NBC. The UGA/Bama game we're competing with is on CBS, although they won't get Gameday because Bama has already been on twice.

Thank you. That's pretty confusing. I'm glad I don't have TV channels so I don't have to ever worry about that.

Just read this in an article, Jordan Howard is the first FBS running back in 20 seasons (!!!) to rush for at least 140 yards in the first four games of a season. Call me crazy, but with him, we have a good shot Saturday, regardless of how well the defense does or not. Got to remember our third quarter defense, so if we're down, we can catch up then.

In some of their boards most OSU fans think this will be a super easy game for them. 90% of them didn't even know that Howard is the nation's leading rusher. And even then, they say if OSU had played IU's schedule, Elliott would be at 1000 yds rushing already.

He's only one player. If we can't stretch the D with pass plays they're going to stuff him over and over because we'll be ridiculously easy to predict. If our wide receivers aren't all feeling as healthy as humanly possible and ready to play, Howard will not be able to break this D the way he has in the past. Let's not forget, this OSU defensive line isn't practicing against Cameron Walker, they're practicing against an RB who will be playing on Sundays. They understand the run.

And, we can catch up so long as we aren't too far behind by then. I mean, we can't win every game by only playing 15 minutes.

I'll admit here that OSU is my second favorite college football team (started dating my wife whose father is an alum and huge fan, needed stuff to talk about) and I follow them some and listen to their podcasts and they are completely unworried. Over 5ish hours of podcasts there was less than 30 minutes of talking about Indiana in their Indiana previews. But you know what? They totally had our number. They accurately talked about our weaknesses, pointed out their own strengths relative to those weaknesses, and laid out a simple game plan to score 700 points on us.

From what I've seen and heard from our side, we're the ones who are just looking at the final scores/records of the first three games and thinking "Hey, these guys aren't so tough" but they really are. Our optimism for football is great and refreshing, but let's not pretend they should be scared of the second worst defense in the Big Ten missing one of our essential players. Or they should be afraid we'll score at will on the second best defense in the Big Ten. This game is at a totally different level than what we've seen so far, I'm just saying, stock extra beer.

Yeah this^. It is great there is so much outstanding enthusiasm for the program right now, even from asshats like Dakich. But, some of you guys are getting way ahead of yourselves if you think we're being vastly overlooked. There is a reason they are the number 1 team in the nation, their talent is way better than what we have. I hope our guys prove me wrong, but the acting like their fanbase is ill-informed when it comes to football couldn't be further from the truth

And to build on this a little, do they have ill-informed fans? Absolutely, who doesn't? But, they also have a lot more very well-informed fans. I talked about this a little in the Defense thread when I mentioned how many resources they have available to get deep breakdowns of games and players. They have a very long and very rich football history, this leads to their fans studying the game closely because it's really enjoyable to tear apart every play of a game you just dominated. I would say without hesitation even their average fan has been to and watched more football games than any Indiana fan even outside of studying it deeper. And their serious fans are more numerous and everywhere. OSU is a football school, they know football.

Indiana fans have shown great support these last couple of years. But, anything they know about schematics and deep football analysis comes from the NFL, because almost no one is examining IU games like that and even if they are, it isn't always easy to read or listen after a bad loss. All the basketball knowledge criticisms levied at other schools (often rightly) from Indiana fans should come to mind. I think generally, Indiana fans have a higher level of knowledge of the technical side of basketball than fans at most other non-blueblood schools. And I bet most would agree with me there. So, when we're dismissive of a game against Rutgers, no one thinks twice about it because we have the knowledge to back it up. It's the same thing here, but to an even greater degree because so much of football is the technical aspect, that's why we get so upset at a bad DC or OC, because we know that even with players who aren't the best, a good scheme can cover that up.

OSU has a great coaching staff (most of whom will end up in the NFL in the next 5 years) to put together very good schemes and some incredible players to run them. And their fans know that. They had some hiccups in the first games, but they're also starting a quarterback who now has what, 6 games under his belt? He has improved mechanics and decision-making every time he steps on the field, and any Indiana fan who thinks we'll put this game away without some of the most incredible luck any team has ever experienced is delusional.

Two good quotes from a Land-Grant Holy Land article about the game...

"It's not an exaggeration to say that there are few things more consistent in college football than Ohio State beating Indiana. The Hoosiers have not recorded an actual win over the Buckeyes since 1988. They have beaten Ohio State just twice since 1952. . . . Indiana, historically, hasn't come close. Since their 27-27 tie back in 1990, Indiana has come within seven points of Ohio State just three times, in 1991, 1993, and the famous 2012 shootout, which Ohio State won 52-49."

and

"Right now, the Hoosiers are 100th in the country in preventing explosive plays, a welcome sight for a Buckeye squad loaded with potential playmakers and looking to get back to more consistent offensive explosion. Their S&P+ defensive ratings in the 2nd and 4th quarters? 125 and 103 respectably, suggesting a lack of depth across the unit (they actually have a 27 ranked unit for the 3rd quarter). If that level of depth is showing wear and tear against G5 competition that doesn't even recruit especially well, it doesn't bode well for long battles with Ohio State's offensive line or Ezekiel Elliott.

There's more. Indiana's 3rd down defense? 116 in the country, per S&P+. Standard downs? 110th. Their defensive havoc rating, or their ability to defend passes, get tackles for loss, and set up big defensive plays? Ranges from below average (77, DL havoc rate) to near the worst in the country (111th, linebacker havoc rate)."
