Pitino gets extension at Minnesota

Recommended Posts

Let's see...they missed the NCAA the year after winning the NIT and most people are picking Minnesota to be in the bottom four in the Big Ten next year. Honestly I figured he'd get the axe after this coming season. How the heck can Minnesota possibly justify this?

The press release reads like they're afraid of him bolting to another program. He's done absolutely nothing of consequence there. Minnesota is seeing ghosts.

Even if he took his team to 2 consecutive Final Fours, the buyout terms wouldn't stop him from leaving if a big name program came calling. Doesn't make much sense to me.

It's ridiculous; it's absurd'; it's stupid, but it's a fact of life in big time college athletics.  The usual justification is that it's a major hindrance to recruiting if the recruits can't be assured the coach will be there throughout their career.

It's the reality of the coaching carousel. If a coach is considered a lame duck and is getting near the end of his contract, it is a clear signal to recruits that the coach will not be there. In other words, the death knell for any chance of recruiting success.

The only solution is to give said coach an extension and then eat the buyout when you want to get rid of the coach.
