OT: Can someone please explain IUPUI

Recommended Posts

This has always confused me and I've never heard a real answer on it. Yes....I was an OOS student while at IU, so excuse my ignorance on this. But what exactly is IUPUI/the other IUPU schools? Are these separate schools from IU/PU or combined branch campuses? What's the difference between an IUPU school and an IU branch campus like IU-Kokomo?

The way it was explained to me is that IUPUI is a separate school, but students receive degrees from either IU or Purdue. So an IU student can be roommates with a Purdue student, take classes in the same building, but each go to separate schools, receive separate degrees affiliated with either IU or PU, but don't actually go to those schools the way an IU student in Kokomo technically goes to IU?

Also, the IU grad schools at Indy are IUB grad schools right? Or are they IUPU grad schools but just have the IU focus in them?

I was also an out of state student but here's what I found: It is mostly IU programs and governed by the IU Board of Trustees. It only has two Purdue programs which unsurprisingly include engineering. I suppose two students could take classes in the same building and get different degrees but, for example, one classroom would be Business and the other would be Engineering. They wouldn't sit next to each other in the same major class and get degrees from separate schools.

It looks to me like it's an IU branch campus with 20 schools, 18 that are IU and 2 that are Purdue (engineering and science). IUPUI is governed by the IU board of trustees. last year 5.474 students got IU degrees and 1.413 students got Purdue degrees

I believe the grad schools are IU grad schools and Purdue grad schools, depending on the subject IE Dentistry IU, engineering Purdue and the only ones specifically IUB grad schools are those located on the Bloomington campus.

IU.edu is for all 8 campuses, Indiana.edu is Bloomington campus

So is Dan Quayle an IU alum or IUPUI alum?

No one actually gets an "IUPUI" degree.

It says Indiana University  same as IU bloomington, but instead of saying "given at Bloomington Indiana" it says "given at  Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis Indiana"

My wife, went like many of us, went to the local juco in programs that transferred 100% to the state schools. Her program at IU required that her 4th year would have to be taken at the IU School of Medicine in Indy through IUPUI.  Instead of finding a place to live for 1 year in Bloomington and then another place to live the next year in Indy, she and several from our hometown transferred to IUPUI to finish their degrees.  Four of them rented an apartment together off High School Road next to I-465.  Only 20 people per year were accepted into her program and IU was the only school offering the program. 3 of the 20 selected came from our small town and had been close friends for years.

Her diploma is from Indiana University. One of her roommates graduated from Purdue in Electrical Engineering and works at Crane. They could have taken classes with the Purdue students if there was a class they needed.

My niece is at IUPUI now and my son was set to go there. At the last minute, he decided to go to USI.

My aunt Bethany Neal-Beliveau is a professor at IUPUI. IUPUI is mainly owned by IU. Others are more 50/50. You can tell who owns what by the amount of degrees provided by which school. You either get an IU or a PU degree. Or many students (I did this) took many of my classes at IPFW and they transferred. So it's cheaper that way.

Correction. IU School of Medicine is separate from IUPUI as it has existed the early 1900's and IUPUI didn't officially exist until 1969. It just so happens that both are in the same area.

I will try my best to explain. The IUPU schools were created by the state in the late 60's to serve students in three cities: Indy, Ft. Wayne, and Columbus. The benefit is that a student had more majors available than if it was just a new IU or Purdue (e.g. Business or Engineering). IUPUI is under the IU system with IUPUC being a direct extension of IUPUI. IUPUFW is under the Purdue system. Students at IUPUI and IUPUC receive IU credit while students from IUPUFW receive Purdue credits.

IUPUI is a distinct and separate school from IUB as are the regionals: IUNW, IUSB, IUK, IUSE, and IUE. Most of the IU system is administered through people at IUB, but IUPUI has administrative staff as well since it is roughly the same size as IUB. Additionally, the IU School of Medicine is part of the IU system and not solely specific to IUPUI. This is mainly because the IUSOMed predated IUPUI by roughly 65 years.

Interestingly enough, the IUSOMed was technically a IU Purdue collaboration. Both schools wanted to have the states school of medicine program. IU had the faculty and Purdue had the building. The state made a compromise by placing the School of Medicine in Indy using Purdue's building and IU faculty, and under IU's supervison.

Confused yet? If not, I could go on about some of the state programs where you could get Purdue engineering credit at IUSB or IUK, but those credits would be immediately recognized as transfer credit from Purdue by IU even though the student was attending only that IU school. Crazy,eh?

Oh, and to address the grad school question. It used to be separate, and that caused some issues with the Thunderbird MBA program since it was through IUPUI and not specifically Kelley. But that distinction has since been fixed. :)
