Does "This is Indiana" really have pull anymore?

Recommended Posts

I honestly believe that it has nothing to do with branding. In college basketball, the single most important marketing tool is your head coach. Tradition means little to these kids. Find the right coach at a place like Indiana, and branding takes care of itself, in a big way.

Well ask yourself this... Do we want Wisconsin success or Kentucky success? You can hate on Kentucky all you want but they've been to 4 Final Fours and an Elite 8 under Calipari plus the championship. They just went 38-1. They only lost 2 games during AD's freshman year. Or look at Kansas who has won the Big 12 what? 11 or 12 times straight now? I'd like for Indiana to be at that height. Not where Wisconsin is. And same goes for their playstyle. I wouldn't watch if IU played like that. Not how basketball should be played.

That's a false choice.  I don't want Wisconsin or Kentucky success---I WANT INDIANA SUCCESS.  Each program has to build its own identity.  I think ours should be a combination of highly skilled/highly ranked kids AND high-character kids who bust their butts for the program. I guess a hybrid of the two you mentioned. I do think we have fallen short recently by not having enough experienced players so I would like to see upperclassmen again.  We were great with Cody and Vic but we were also experienced.  I predict we will be great again this next season but it will not be just because of Bryant---it will be because we have an experienced team again. I think and hope Crean has learned this lesson with all the roster turnover and hope he is recruiting several 3 stars who want to actually put in the work and stay at a program all 4 years.  Look at The Movement---besides Yogi they all MOVED alright--they moved along. I still say IU is an elite program---now we just need to consistently get elite results!

Well to be honest I don't care about getting 3 stars who will stay 4 years if we're pulling in a bunch of 4 and 5 stars. Roster turnover is ok when you're successful and those kids are leaving for the NBA like Duke, Kentucky and Kansas. I'd like to actually see us sign a couple McD's AA's in one year. We almost did with Lyles and Blackmon and I think those two backing out(Blackmon did stay with us) hurt a bit. Lyles would have been big time for us. But we won't be great if the defense is so terrible again. And there is ho estly nothing at all that says it'll be any better other than just hope.

That's another way to build the program---not necessarily wrong.  I just happen to prefer the model of a strong base of 3/ low 4 stars who will stick around and develop and then sprinkle in the high 4 stars and 5 stars for good measure.  I am fine with one McD AA a year as long as we have an experienced core to put him with. I have nothing against high talent---I just like high development and experience too.

Notre Dame has the movie "Rockne All American" and "Rudy". Even in the down years they drew good recruits. We have "Hoosiers" and I think that works for some.

I think Crean is bringing a good name back. He runs a clean program and gets good P.R. from the media. This is the year he also brings consistent winning.

You can get 4 and stars who will stay 4 years. We did have Christian Watford. Kyle Singler for Duke was a Top 10 recruit and stayed 4 years. But nowadays you just gotta go with the kids that'll be there for 1, 2 or 3 years. And really 3 years is the new 4 because you can get a degree in 3.

The thing is, it takes more than one year to build consistency. After this season, he is likely to lose much of the team. The key is to keep building, not the once in every 3 to 4 years.

umm. 1 year of winning doesn't constitute "consistent" winning. Consistent winning is done over the course of multiple years and with our expected roster turnover and Crean's track record, we have no reason to expect anything better than .500 next season.

However, I do expect us to have a good year, THIS year.

we've seen what he's been able to do knowing who is leaving. He knew Zeller, Oladipo, Hulls, Watford and Elston were gone... and then we missed the NIT. If he has a great year this year and then a crap year after that... it won't matter if we win the title this year.. he's fired.

I would venture to guess if he wins a natty this year he would be at IU for at least the rest of his current contract. I don't see that happening so we won't get to find out.

if he wins the natty this year and misses the NCAA tourney then he needs fired. I won't care a bit.

Interpret please!

my bad lol. You shouldn't always trust your phone when just swiping across the screen. But there is no proof that they have cheated so it's silly to say they have.

If we don't make the NIT the following year the only way I give him a pass is if we won the national championship.

I will not give him that pass. If he was Kevin Ollie then I'd give him a pass because then he'd be in his 2nd year.

To be fair, it's a lot easier to win the conference when you play in a dog crap conference.  The only way Indiana could be at that height would be to change to an easy conference like Kansas.

A coach with two vacated Final Fours at a university with a long history of cheating means nothing? Okay...

there is no proof that days he had anything to do with Marcus Camby or Derrick Rose.
