Crean Recruitment in the Midwest?

Recommended Posts

Vonleh was a one year rental. So I disagree with that. Fischer was the backup...I'll agree. Priller and April were "desperate plan B" and both are unworthy of a spot on a Big Ten roster right now.

he might of been a 1 year rental but he was the rental the staff recruited hard after trey decided to decommit. When they first recruited noah after trey decommitted he was still a 2014 prospect it was during the process that he switched to 2013 ( which should of been a sign he was only here for 1 year)

A one year guy is never a backup plan.   Or shouldn't be.  I've been very hard on Crean because he doesn't build rosters.  He frequently goes from one year to the next and figures out what he needs and adds pieces.   That's a recipe for manic inconsistency, and....    Vonleh was recruited only when Lyles decommitted, so I struggle to call him a backup plan, I guess.   He's more of an "oh crap...we need a tall guy.  Who's available?"

not a bad oh crap we need a tall guy to get I would think I believe he was a top 10 prospect

Not at all...but sometimes you get lucky when you have an "oh crap" need, and sometimes you get Tim Priller and Jeremiah April.

not sure vonleh was an oh crap get. They had plenty of time to recruit him and beat out some heavy hitters to get him. Priller and april on the other hand were recruited(a total of maybe a month) after fischer and vonleh left. I'm sure I wasn't the only one here that when they committed say who (in the movie major league Indians fans voice) who the blank r these guys. I was on the site waiting for updates during vonlehs visit and was going crazy when he committed I just disagree he was a last second option

You said it yourself.  We didn't recruit him until Lyles de-committed.   Just agreeing with you.

lyles decommitted after his freshman year in high school lol. They still had 3 years to fill his spot. Priller and april signed after we lost in BTT last year. They haven't even been in the program a year yet. A little different situation if u ask me

You made that point (Lyles decommit causing Vonleh's recruitment).  I didn't.    We had 3 years so we signed a one year rental the year before Lyles would have arrived here.   Where was the long term plan?   Especially after Fischer, or in addition to Fischer?  Didn't have one.  So we end up with no bigs for a year.   You can be right if you want....it's a moot and meaningless discussion.

its not about being right Imo the long term plan was vonleh here 1 or maybe 2 years and Fischer recruited to be a 4 year guy to cover the programs butt if vonleh left early. I think the staff and fan base was stunned when he left after semester I know i was I thought he would of been a force down low in his sophomore and junior year. Since fischer left in early 2014 (3 and half years earlier then expected) they were scrambling after the 2014 season. To this day I feel fischer leaving the program was the biggest disappointment of last years team. Losing a top 100 guy who was supposed to be your big for seasons to come midseason leaves you with limited options in the late signing period when most of the top recruits had already committed. Now asking why the recruits we were after in that late period didnt want to come here (clark mich st , yante maten Georgia and cunningham Bradley ) which left us with priller and April that could be an interesting discussion. Awesome discussion old friend

Are you sure Lyles de committed after his Freshman year? I know he committed going into his Freshman year, but I though he didn't decommit until between his sophomore and Junior years. If I am correct, then it really would have been a short recruitment of Vonleh who is a year older than Lyles.

Yeah I thought for sure he didn't decommit until later in high school

Yup, that would have been between Sophomore and Junior......about a week before Junior year started.

all I know is at the time troy williams or noah(who was recruited as a 2014 pledge first) hadn't committed to Iu yet and they were 2013 commits it seems like enough time 2 recruit for for the 2014 class when they weren't finished in the 2013 class yet. Fwiw trey committed to kensucky on on nov 5 2013. 15 months after he decommitted from Iu which left him plenty of time to find a new home and Iu plenty of time to find someone else. In the end vonleh and lyles would of been the same for us ( one year rental, it just happens it came a year early for vonleh)

Take a look at the kids he's missed and tell me what IU could have done with them.   He doesn't have to get all of them, but he has to prioritize them and be willing to make room for a Gary Harris, who initially wanted to come here.   And you have to listen to the coaches who tell you Jeremy Hollowell is lazy and keep that spot open for Harris.   You have to get Trevon Blueitt (who also wanted to come).   You have to see kids like Dee Davis and Bryant McIntosh (neither were heavily recruited by Indiana).   You just can't go for the obvious kids like Blackmon or Yogi or Zeller.   And you cannot let Trey Lyles de-commit and choose Kentucky when your backup plans end up being Jeremiah April and Tim Priller.    "Really well" is a very large stretch.

You and I must talk to different people.

You and I must talk to different people.

Probably.  I don't feel the need to banter back and forth, but I would call "who I talk to" as credible and unquestionable as anyone can be relative to things like this.   And it's very easy to make the assumption that nobody knows anything or nobody can be closer than you are to any particular situation.  I know that, and I'm not interested in a pissing contest.   But...and I mean no offense, I promise on one of these two, there is no possible way you have a better source on it than I do.   Not in every case and not all the time.   However, in this case....I am 100% confident in saying what I did, and there isn't a person alive who is more credible.  Read into that what you would like.
