Is this the worst defensive team in IU history?

Recommended Posts

Yes, this is the worst I have ever seen. The gimmick schemes we use just exploits it even worse. We had every opportunity to use the press this year to take advantage of our quickness and disadvantage of length. Yet we only see it in the last 3 minutes of games we are down by large numbers. I have read we plan to use it tonight, but it will be hard for our players to over achieve at this since it is a new concept for us this late. If we would have been teaching and using this all year, we would have perfected it going into post season play. It's like throwing the Hail Mary when you should have been running the deep routes all year.

Speaking of defense why don't we press more often? It's seems to work out when we do. Just a thought

The reason why a lot of teams don't press is that the energy expended to play that frenetic style, takes away from the energy needed to play offense and basic half court defense. I don't remember Knight ever utilizing a full court press, but then, his teams didn't need to, as they would kick your ass in the half court. Iowa, under Lute Olsen, and later, George Raveling, used to full court press people to death, but those teams could shoot for sh*t, so they had to make up for it by getting steals and making layups.

When Knight coached, his teams were so darned well conditioned that they could play excellent half court defense without it adversely affecting the productivity of their motion offense.

Well for one thing they only played zone once I believe the rest of the game was man and we did well granted it was northwestern but they do have some very good shooters that we held in check. The energy and passion was awesome we fought for the boards probably better than we have all year!!!!
