Defense! Defense! Defense!

Recommended Posts

The one consistent for this team has been the lack of defense ( except for the last five minutes of the Maryland game).  What are the specific problems in your opinion? Do you guys think Coach is not devoting enough time in the practice sessions  to teach defense? Or is it lack of player commitment?

I personally don't like how we allow the other teams to get comfortable to apply their offensive flow.  I would like to apply more hard fouls, or apply pressure to keep them off balanced for a couple of plays. There are other problems, but I want to know from you what those other problems are.  Thanks.

Teaching the basics of division one defense would be a good start. Since we don't have kids flunking out of classes, that means they can learn. Just not being taught! Hell, someone send Marnie a fundamentals of defense book. Maybe she can TEACH them.

Not so sure they wouldn't flunk out of classes that weren't sports related. Nonetheless defensive play begins with an unselfish mindset, this team doesn't have that character.

We don't have anyone to stop or alter the shot of anyone that gets in the paint. Teams get the ball in the paint and we have to rely on them missing shots to stop them. Hartman is our best defender and teams can go over the top. Holt has length, but hasn't been able because of strength or experience to be a post defender.

When you have Robinson guarding a 7' player, you are going to have a bad time stopping anyone. I don't think our guard are bad defenders, they just don't have anyone behind them to protect the basket.

Ball You Man is a good place to start. You know, what we all learned in 3rd grade. We have no rim protector BUT we make it too easy for the opposition to get to the rim with poor fundamentals. Again, these are all things we dont have to worry about if we just hit 17 threes.

Lets bring the IU Southeast coach up for a clinic on Defense 101....We could use good NAIA defense and I do believe they went to the Final Four last year or the year before.....just sayin....

Darn right! Better yet coach Mike Lightfoot from Bethel. Four time national NAIA, NJCCA and NCAA Div. 2 coach to teach aggressive defense and teamwork!

It all starts on the perimeter and our guards,Yogi excluded  seem preoccupied with overplaying the passing lanes looking for the steal instead of keeping their man in front of them.Gambling defenses are great when you have protection at the rim.Not so much with us.

We do have a rim protector but he's too busy trying to lead the team in accepted charge calls.

Watching JBJ in high school I knew defense would be an issue since his dad never made him play any but geez. Trying to think of a guy in the past as talented but terrible on defense. Having a hard time coming up with any.

You don't have to look far. He starts on the same team.

Folks, we have no idea of man on ball d, helpside d, moving your feet and you name it. The total defensive philosophy of this staff needs to be blown up and started from scratch. You would think Crean would have multitudes of game tape from past Indiana teams to study and really get a clue how to coach it. Somewhere there has to be practice film too. Maybe he could just go to a high school game and see how Indiana coaches coach it. Sounds funny but Crean just can't coach it. If it doesn't involve his 400 page offensive playbook, I guess he's just not interested.

Threads like these are fascinating; you learn so much! I didn't realize it was so simple. Thank you guys!

Dude, you have a serious issue with over simplifying other peoples arguments. Many people have gone well in depth into the issues with Crean and the current direction of the program. You always just blow them off by saying things like "you aren't behind the scenes so you don't know what is going on." Or "Crean is more qualified by virtue of pursuing a career in coaching, so you shouldn't criticize him.". Or flat out saying other people's comments hold no weight because they are just too outlandish in your opinion. Or in this case greatly over simplifying people's arguments.

They have no fear. No discipline. Crean is a great guy, loved by all but he's not a Big 10 or top 10 coach. Yogi is not the only scorer on the team but the last 2 min Crean runs plays as though no one else can shoot the ball. Footwork is sloppy and lazy. Not working hard in the floor, visit the bench.

That's not me saying something; that's just a reality. If you've never been involved, how can you know how it really works? Sure we can all have levels of understanding but I don't think most are qualified to criticize coaching maneuvers.

I don't think that should prevent people from expressing themselves; just saying it shouldn't be taken as accurate all of the time.

ha! I like this one :)

If I didn't watch it every game, I would have taken any bet against it. How you take a game changing shot blocking, leaping ability and make it virtually non existant is the reverse of coaching genius. Meanwhile you take a marginally gifted athlete like Hammons who has a career best block shots against us because you can't teach a fourth grade pump fake is also reverse genius coaching. Only at Indiana under Crean do you see this destruction of well taught basketball. That's before I get into his defense on Hammons and Lurch or his dribble dribble chuck it up Yogi game winners that have won us so many. I could go on all night...sorry Crean is just a terrible coach.
