I get your point, but those other schools have always gotten good players from Indiana:Scott Skyles, Zach Randolph, Kyle Macy.

It would be interesting to go back and make a list of recruits that Knight "missed" on. For example Shawn Kemp is a good example of someone Knight recruited for years and just couldnt convince him to come to IU

That would be interesting. Seems like we have not done as well with kids in the northern third of the state.

I always try to find stories about those big time recruits that Knight missed out on. Anyone have any stories about Knight recruiting Glenn Robinson, James Blackmon Sr, Kyle Macy, etc?

We've never locked up all the Indiana talent---but we get our fair share.

I remember when we lost Kemp, Montross, and May, just to name a few.

I like looking at Indiana first and trying to fill our needs but we are a national program and there is nothing wrong with recruiting nationally---the Indiana high school ranks are not always loaded---and I like the toughness and leadership that kids from other parts of the country can bring to the mix---for example---Victor O!

Indiana and the Midwest should be our foundation and we build on it with kids from other parts of the country.

I read a story on the old scout board a few years back about Glenn Robinson's recruitment. Basically Glenn had too many off the court issues and his grades weren't up to par for Knight's desire and that's basically why Knight stopped recruiting him. I don't know how much truth is in that story but just what I read.

Heres a link I find from another board about the Glenn Robinson recruitment. It's the 5th post down.

A few years back they asked Knight what his biggest regret was as a coach and he said not recruiting nationally was his biggest regret. He said he concentrated too much on the midwest and never too initiative to travel across the country too much to recruit. Interesting

I remember Bobby saying recruiting was the part of coaching that he really disliked.

Cut into his fishing time.

Probably cost him in his latter days here.

Yeah when recruiting started to center on AAU and summer tournaments, he never really adjusted. He didn't like competing for players, he wanted players to come to him to play at IU.

Bob Knight still finished in the top half of the conference every season and made the tournament every year, he missed the 64 team field a total of once in his time at IU.

IU has struggled lately because of bad coaching hires.

Totally agree. If you make a list of all the things that the top programs have that we don't, you'll quickly realize that its the big name coach. Some argue that we were set so far behind since the Kelvin Sampson debacle and no matter who we had in place, we weren't going to win for awhile. I disagree.

Knight once said he wasn't going to beg players to come to IU because he wanted players who wanted to be here.

It's a shame the game has changes so much that unless you're Cal---it doesn't work that way anymore.

Kids want to be wined and dined nowadays.

I don't think that is 100 percent true. There are kids that want to come here one their own accord these days. Of course we still recruit hard but there are kids who want to be here and at other schools

I think it goes back even further than Sampson. I think the last few years of Davis killed us as a program. I mean if you look at where we stood nationally and in state as far as relationships with high school and AAU coaches. Indiana high school and AAU coaches couldnt stand him and it put a rift between Indiana high schools and Indiana University

While watching the Louisville game I kept thinking of a familiar pounding. 92-93 team verses UCLA early in the season. We lost by 15? But, in the Dance we faced them again and beat them down to make it to the Final Four! All I'm saying is that this team is extremely fun to watch and improving every game!!!

Agree---it's still early and a lot of improving yet to do---especially on defense.

But there is a high ceiling with this young group----they will be fun to watch!
