IMO 1979 when the NCAA expanded from 32 to 40 teams and then to 48 in 1980.  Then to 64 in 1985.  The NCAA expansions meant fewer high quality teams available for the  NIT field.  On top of that, I think the NCAA just did a helluva lot better job of marketing its tournament and securing TV coverage.

The NIT started in 1938.
