Yogi was advised not to shoot 3's by Crean, his role was a facilitator. A major thorn in the side of that team was that Crean was still having 2.5-3 hour practices the days before games at the end of the season (for reference, Knight would do ~45 minute walk throughs the day before tourney games because he wanted his team to be rested). Zeller said the entire team was exhausted for the Temple and Syracuse games.

yep, advised not to shoot 3's. Great! That would be perfectly fine if the opposing teams didn't know that same thing. When they sag off that much, you have to make them pay, or play someone else.

I'm not arguing, wish coach would've turned Yogi loose. By "advised" I mean Yogi got his butt chewed out by Crean if he took shots from behind the arc.

Of all of the things Crean does, having practices before games probably annoys me the most. You just don't do that the day of a game. Never. I can't think of any positives that could come from it and a ton of negatives. No wonder our players flamed out at the end of the tourney. smh

May sound crazy, but I would contribute Yogi going from skinny H.S. kid to a Freshmen with Popeye arms for his Freshmen year struggles. The guy had to get used to firing off treys with those new cannons he developed.

I agree 100% with you here

Does he still do it?

If so, I'm changing my answer in the other thread about not blaming Crean 100% for the L'Vile loss.

I have never heard that till now. If this is still going on, and especially before the Louisville game, I'm gonna have words to say.

Not on this board though. I fear thy Ban Hammer, O' Mighty Mods!

I can't find anything from the internet, but I'm not sure I would expect to. This is the kind of thing that can only be BB4IU'd I think.

I honestly am not sure. But I remember it circulating on the boards during that 12-13 season. I think Crean even addressed it at one point? Could be wrong there though. But yeah if it's still going on, just reaffirms to me that Crean isn't the right guy

I'd be curious to know if the "walk thru" and "practice" are being considered the same thing here. Over the last 7 years I've heard numerous analysts talk about how intense Crean's pregame "walk thrus" are. I do know that in the 2012-13 team practiced /watched film like crazy all the way to the tourney.

If true and at all verified I can't believe it wouldn't have blown up more. It's possibly the worst coaching decision I've ever heard of. It would be universally panned everywhere there is to pan a decision if it were verified right? It's not even something you have to be an expert to realize. Outside of stretches and keeping loose the team shouldn't be doing anything requiring more exertion than picking up a bong and a blintz. All you have to do is watch the last quarter of L'Vile to see why.

And that's believable and more acceptable. It's more than I'd like, but can totally dig and not be flabbergasted about. Things that make our players exert any more energy than necessary before the game are unacceptable.

Crean did have long and exhausting ball practices. even after he said he cut back, it was known that it was a lie. Basketball4iu can shed more light on this, but it's true.

That explains the tailspin that team was in after @MSU.  We've looked like we were out of gas at the end of the season a few times.

Yogi took several deep shots in the James Madison game in the 1st half, no?

I remember that. Yogi dominated that game on offense from everywhere until it was out of hand.
