Best Pure Shooter/Best Scorer In IU BBall History

Recommended Posts

Hoosier Nation---who is the best pure shooter and the best scorer in IU BBall history and why?

They can be the same or different people. It could be someone who did not get a lot of time on the court or a regular starter!

I'll be Mr. Obvious and pick two no-brainers to get the discussion going:

Best Pure Shooter---Steve Alford

Best Scorer------------Calbert Cheaney

Alford was famous for his jump shot  and Cheaney is the Big Ten's all time leading scorer.

Who you got and why?

Calbert is untouchable as the best scorer and most will say Alford the best pure shooter.  But, on the same team with Alford was Jeff Oliphant from tiny L & M High School.  Oliphant suffered a serious knee injury and rarely saw action but I recall reading articles that he could routinely beat Alford in games of 'horse' when regular practice sessions ended.

In my opinion the best pure shooter has got to go to Alford. I love Calbert. He was a left-handed scoring weapon. But Alford would come off those screens, catch and shoot those textbook jumpers. He was money if he got an opening. My pick for best Hoosier scorer would be George McGinnis. Although, he only played one year at IU before going to the ABA, he completed his season with a 30 PPG average. He was amazing.

not that this will persuade anybody...but I attended IU in the early 1990's...

and I actually had the opportunity to play against Calbert at the HPER...

he wouldn't ever..I mean ever..play pick-up ball without Chris Reynolds...

and those 2 would wipe the floor every game played...

no sheet...they would pick up 3 slow white boys, and wipe the competition...ahh...good times..

Lots of great picks---another great scorer--- although not a pure shooter ---was Damon Bailey---Indiana high school's all time leading scorer.. I wish he would have been healthy all 4 years at IU.

A story: I used to follow the Hoosiers on their barn-storming tours in Southern Indiana and I went to a game where Damon was basically past his prime and was coaching a team of IU players with Moye, Leach, etc.  A group of college all stars from the area closed to within a few points in the second half on IU.  An older (and a little out of shape) Bailey checked himself into the game and took it over. He posted up--shot threes--rebounded--dunked---the crowd was in shock--- but we all realized that we had just witnessed a real-life Indiana legend doing his thing.  IU won big!  Good times...

Don Schlundt led the Hoosiers to the 1953 NCAA title and set a scoring record of 2,192 points (again...no 3 point line), a record that stood for 32 years and is only topped by Steve Alford and Calbert Cheaney.  He was a 3 time All American and NCAA Champion.  A true scorer.
