Lebanon senior pitcher Tara Trainer (#Indiana signee) named to the USA Today Preseason Softball Team. http://usatodayhss.com/2015/american-family-insurance-all-usa-preseason-softball-team

Trainer had a dominating freshman year and then missed most of her sophomore season after a near-fatal car crash.  She bounced back in 2014 in a big way, going 19-1 with a 0.45 ERA and 256 K’s for a team that went to the state semifinals before losing to the eventual state champion. The Indiana signee has great speed, movement and control of her pitches.
Tara named Ohio Gatorade POY.

Trainer posted a 18-0 record, with a 0.30 ERA and 244 strikeouts in 117.1 innings. She has also batted .422 with four home runs and 36 RBI while leading her team to the No. 6 ranking in the USA TODAY Super 25 Expert Rankings. Lebanon is ranked No. 2 nationally by MaxPreps.

Trainer has maintained a 3.77 GPA in the classroom. A member of the National Honor Society, she has volunteered locally on behalf of the Dayton Children's Hospital and as a youth softball coach.

We could use more of her type from my brief check into our history!

Last weekend I was in Atlanta and the only thing sportswise I got to see in my hotel was the softball world series. From the small sample size I saw, softball is all about pitching and in the few games I saw, pitch count and rest days mean nothing. It's good to finally have an ace on our side.

Fast pitch softball is a more natural body movement with less stress on your elbow/shoulder so it's much safer to pitch on back to back days. Great to have an ace ranked this high. Now if we can recruit at a high level around her...

Trainer sounds legit. She's going to be a good addition to their team. I think pitching is all they needed... they had the bats. Also, the left side of the infield needs some help. Maybe the new transfer will be an infielders. I think they have some great young players in Lehman and Blitz. Impressive stats from both of the youngsters.

"Indiana softball freshman Rebecca Blitz was named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Second Team All-Midwest Region squad on Thursday, marking the first time an Indiana freshman has garnered All-Region honors since Monica Armendarez did so in 1995.

The All-Region accolade, which is voted on by NFCA member coaches from each respective region, is the first for the Hoosiers since Amanda Wagner was named to the Second Team in 2013.

The Birmingham, Ala. native was the only Hoosier to start and play in all 56 games this season. The centerfielder led the team with 59 hits, 41 runs and 15 stolen bases while starting primarily in the lead-off spot. In addition, she was second on the team behind junior Kelsey Dotson with a .438 on-base percentage.

Blitz recorded five games with at least three hits and finished the season on a four-game hitting streak, including a run of 15 combined hits in the last 15 contests of the year."

WESTFIELD, Ind. - The Indiana softball team opened up fall play over the weekend at the College GameDay Tournament presented by Bullpen Tournaments in Westfield, Ind. After tying with Ball State, 3-3, in eight innings, three Hoosier pitchers combined for a no-hitter in a 1-0 shutout of Valparaiso.

"Sunday was awesome," said Indiana head coach Michelle Gardner. "I was very pleased with a tie with Ball State and the win in the second game. I was just excited to see everybody compete so hard."

In the contest against the Cardinals, sophomore Rebecca Blitz scored a pair of runs for the Hoosiers, while also picking up a hit and a pair of walks. Senior Michelle Huber went 3-for-4 at the plate and brought in a pair of runs on a game-tying RBI double in the seventh inning that scored Blitz and senior Alyssa Rosati.

Sophomore Taylor Uden also had a multi-hit game against Ball State as she went 2-for-4 for the Hoosiers. Junior Erin Lehman and seniors Shannon Cawley and Kelsey Dotson each picked up a hit in the game.

The second game of the day saw the Indiana pitching staff shine as freshmen Josie Wood, Tara Trainer and Olivia White combined to no-hit Valparaiso.

Blitz collected two hits while again registering a run for the Hoosiers as she was brought in by Dotson, who also picked up a pair of hits against the Crusaders. For the weekend Blitz, who was named NFCA Second Team All-Region after her freshman campaign, reached base in seven out of eight at bats.

"When you carry as many players as we're carrying right now it's extremely important to get the idea of team," said Gardner. "It's hard because they're still competing for positions but we're still just one team. We're focused on that quite a bit, just truly trying to get that 'it's about us, not I' mentality. I felt like we did a good job with a lot of things yesterday. It was pretty exciting."

Indiana continues its fall slate this Friday as the Hoosiers host Indiana State in doubleheader action beginning at 5 p.m. Admission is free to the public.

"They're just so excited to put on a jersey, suit up and be at home," said Gardner. "I think it will be really special for all of the players because it's their time to get together and get a feel for what will take place in the spring on that field."

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Behind impressive performances by the Hoosier pitchers and an all-around offensive effort in game two, the Indiana softball team split a fall doubleheader with Indiana State on Friday at Andy Mohr Field.

Freshman Josie Wood tossed a complete game in the first contest of the day, giving up just one run to the Sycamores. However, the Hoosiers couldn't take advantage as junior Erin Lehman registered the lone Indiana hit and Indiana fell, 1-0.

Game two was a complete team effort as six different Hoosiers scored to give Indiana a 6-2 victory. Rebecca BlitzMichelle HuberKassi FarmerShannon Cawley and Aimilia McDonough each recorded a pair of hits, including a pair of two-run home runs from Lehman and Farmer.
