Ferrell vs. Lewis

Recommended Posts

Talk of Michael Lewis and his assists record in the top starting lineups thread got me thinking, can Yogi break this record?

Michael Lewis: 545 assists

Yogi Ferrell: 272 assists through 2 seasons

Doesn't get any closer than this, halfway there with half of his career left (for this sake of this conversation lets assume he stays all 4 years).

Will he do it?

Yes. His numbers went down a little bit in terms of pure assists numbers for this past year, though his usage went way up. Some of that could probably be viewed as the talent around him going down, specifically the lack of shooters which saw a consider able drop off. As long as he stays healthy and stays all four years I'd expect him to break that record.

With the gained experience and influx of capable shooters, I expect him to drastically increase his assist numbers from his first two seasons. He won't have to be the scorer next year, and hopefully he becomes an assist driven PG.

I think we still need Yogi to be 1, 2, or 3 most shots on the team. JBJ high shot totals. Not sure who will be third? Troy or Stan?? RoJo, not too likely.

Think Trey Burke!

17 pts 7 assist would be a dream.
17 pts Blackmon
12 pts Troy
12 pts Stan

Yogi is our 2nd best shooter and best passer for next season. He can be/ is that good.

7 assists would be a pretty huge leap in his efficiency. Only three guys actually hit that mark last season, Brickman for LIU, Smith for Louisiana Tech, and Williams for UMASS. Brickman and Smith had insanely high assists per possession numbers, .83 for Brickman, .87 for Smith, though Williams was considerably worse, .45. It is worth noting that Williams's usage rate was the highest of the three and considerably higher than Yogi's. Also, Yogi's assists per possession was .23, he'd have to pretty dramatically improve his efficiency to get to 7 per game

Good stats. May be a tall order but if anyone can do it, he has a chance. Need some shot makers. I hope Troy and Stan vastly improve shooting. We need one more shooter on the floor aside from Yogi and JBJ. Maybe Max? Maybe we can finally convert some ally oops and Hanner and Troy can be recipients.

Lots of questions, but I still see Yogi needing to be one of our primary scorers to be competitive.

Yeah, 7 assists a game seems to be a bit of a stretch.  The IU record is 5.6/game held by Isiah Thomas (1980-81), and he's one of the best point guards ever.

Lots of ifs.  But if he quits feeling like he must shoot and just shoots when it comes to him he should break it.  If he quits feeling like he has to shoot he will probably cut down his turnovers as well.

I expect his assist numbers to go up a bit with more offensive weapons and shooters around him this year. In addition he will not need to shoot as much and I hope that improves his efficiency. 7 assists seems like a stretch though but I would like to see him get some double doubles.

In order to break the record he needs to average 4.3 assists per game (assumes 64 games left in career). Looking at it this way and assuming no injuries it not only seems possible but probable. Go do it Yogi!

Also note worthy that the year you're mentioning with Burke his percentage of team possessions was 26.6% that year, Yogi's was at 24.6% this past season. I'd assume that would stay about the same for this next year.

I'd have to look it up, but I assume the Michigan shooting percentage outside of Burke was considerably better than what we saw with Indiana outside of Yogi this past year.

I second that! I would like to add that an assist is only as good as the players you pass it to. #obviously

Hmmm....

If I were Yogi,

And I was counting on a whole lot more assists real soon,

And I was looking for someone to pass that rock to...

James Blackmon Jr. would do just fine.

Troy Williams had best be working on his 3ball

Robert Johnson will be mighty helpful,

And I betcha either Max Hoetzel or MSB Priller gets some run.

Yup, if I were Yogi, that'd be what I'd be expecting.

Who gave MSB this "Priller" nickname, and what does it mean?
