Coaching Tree

Recommended Posts

How do ya'll feel about the old administration going completely away from the RMK tree? I guess that I kind of understand why. But I think that's what has set us back a little with the past hires. Look what Iowa St. has done with Hoiberg. Or how about Ollie with UConn. I know that Calhoun didn't exactly go out on a great note when he left there as well. But someone had the foresight to keep what tradition that they had going.

Coach K has done OK.  Crews has done OK.  Since they have gone away, get Brad Stevens when the change is finally made.  Suck it up and do what has to be done.

the Knight coaching tree is still blooming...the man was at the helm for damn near 30 years...

I think we will see a plethora of former players, former coaches, and acquaintances find their way to coaching for years to come...

now...will any of them be solid enough to lead IU? dunno...but I would say the odds are in favor of it happening...

30 years is a hell uv a long time to be at 1 place...

I wonder how many you (and me) will be employed by anybody for 30 years....It's almost unheard of in this day and age.

Well, I know most people would think it would be Alford. But to me, back when they actually let RMK go there were several names out there. Dakich was available, Crews, not to mention guys like Woodson, Thomas, Wittman could have been a nice choice. I know, I know, what have these guys done right? To me, we will never know what it could be like because they never got the chance. It just seems to me that when you have an all american at a school trying to recruit kids that it carries a lot more weight than say a guy from some other school. And 30 yrs is a long time. Now we have guys like Dane Fife, AJ Guyton and those classes coming in. I loved that Cheaney was on the staff last yr. I had really hoped that he could stick around. I just think that when you have tradition like we do, it should be nurtured, not thrown out.

Once you remove Coach K from the tree the best shot would be ex-players. Crews has had a long career, and I am sure he is a good coach but his performance was never impressive enough to think. wow! IU really missed in not hiring him. One of the better coaches RMK had on his staff was the least sexy pick of them all, Royce Waltman,(RIP) great guy, good coach but not the kind of "splash" that a program like IU needs to recruit at the level we fans want. As college programs have changed to a farm league of the NBA I'd think that an NBA coach(with IU ties) like Woodson would be the closest to what you need to recruit, Whitman has finally found some success, but it seems he has always been the interim coach of really bad NBA teams. A lot of folks weren't too excited about Woody when his name was mentioned, but after watching him take a team like the Hawks from the absolute BOTTOM of the NBA to a play-off team, the man can coach. This year with the Knicks has been less than sterling no doubt, but then again look at the team. anyone here convinced that Carmello will ever take a team to a NBA championship, when they have to get there through Indy, Miami and Chicago?

His coaching tree isn't exactly very extensive. I mean who did you have in mind, no one comes to my mind immediately when I think Bob Knight coaching tree and being a realistic hire here.

Dave Bliss is probably available.

I've been thinking about it and as far as coaching trees go, I think if you feel the need to follow a particular coaching tree then you may as well focus on the Coach K tree.  Coach K is definitely a product of the RMK tree.  Chris Collins is a guy I'm curious to see how his career progresses.  He did some impressive work in his first season at Northwestern imo even if the final record was not great.

My eternal dark-horse candidate as far as directly from the RMK tree always has been, and always will be, Keith Smart.  I think the dude can flat out coach.  When he coached the Fort Wayne Fury, I thought he did good work.  At the NBA level, he has been an assistant for a number of years.  Every time he gets a sniff at a head coaching job it is as an interim coach on bad teams (Cleveland, Golden State).  I honestly feel like he got a raw deal in GS, he got fired because the new ownership wanted "their guy"...and of course now they are ready to fire Mark Jackson too despite MJax consistently improving the team.  Dysfunctional franchise imo.

If KJ leaves (and I hope like crazy he does). What do you guys think about CTC going after someone like AJ Guyton? Isn't he coaching somewhere in Illinois at the high school level?

He was as assistant coach at Illinois Central College.  He's the head coach of a PBL team, Bloomington Flex, now and they won the championship in both 2012 and 2013.  This article is dated 2011 and refers to Guyton as the head coach, so he's won both of those championships.

EDIT:  The PBL is the Premier Basketball League a professional minor league.
