We Need Two!

Recommended Posts

A summary thought:

We have only one active healthy player for next year above 6'7" (Hanner).

We have one other active, healthy player who plays near the basket (Devin).

We need two more, and as of today, these are our potential (known to the public) options:

Josh Cunningham

Justin Martin

Link Kabadyundi

Deng Deng

Marial Shavok

Feel free to add to this summary list...something's gotta give!

I think Max Hoetzel is listed as 6'8".  I know he is a SF and he's not at all what you want in the post, but I can see him playing a lot of minutes at the 4 position.  Let's think about that position (the 4, or the "traditional PF") in Crean's offense.  I know that in a more traditional setting, you should have the post player and a power forward, but with Crean, it's a little different.  When you look at Crean's best line up he's ever had (something it took him 4 years to build), which was our 2012-2013 team, we really only had one player on the court who needed to be a low post presence; that was Cody Zeller.  We had Watford, originally a 6'8" wing/SF out of high school playing the 4 spot for us.  He was versatile (quicker and better handles than a traditional PF) and could shoot the ball from the outside consistently.  I think with some work in the weight room with our staff (Je'Ney can put the weight on these incoming kids) Max Hoetzel could play the 4 for us.  He can be Watford 2.0. (I do realize that this is a little bit of a stretch and it may take Max a couple years to develop).  I also think Troy Williams, at 6'7", will see more time in that position next year too.

So, we have Hanner (6'9") and Devin (6'7") who will prolly play heavy minutes in the paint as our post players.  Devin of course will also play the 4, but I think he'll play the 5 a lot too.  I really think we just need one more true big.  Mainly just because Devin is undersized for where we will need him to play and who we will need him to defend.  If we can get one big guy 6'9"+ to bang down low and give Hanner a breather, we'll be alright.  Cunningham plays big; great rebounder and he's a warrior around the basket.  I know he's 6'7" but with some added strength before the season, he'd be alright to fill a need in that spot.  I'd obviously like to see us get someone bigger, but at the same time I don't think we need another raw 7 footer on the bench with Peter Jurkin.

If Hanner can improve a great deal over the summer again and add another 7-8lbs, that'd be huge!!!

Crean has likened Max to Steve Novak who (like Wat) played the "stretch" 4. That said, Wat banged a lot on D (as a junior and senior) and made some plays with his back to the basket. Max will be a work in progress but it's not a huge stretch to see him playing that role as he gets older.

Her +/- was pretty pathetic. We don't want that on our team next year.

Good god. This is getting downright pathetic. We will be scouting YMCA games pretty soon.

Why are we not hearing anything with Eron Harris?

Cheaney leaving the program for a mid major and similar role should have alerted us all that things are not right in Bloomington. When you can't retain one of the greatest to ever play for your school, you are sending the wrong messages not only to fans and alumni but more importantly recruits. This will be the longest off season ever.

It should be entertaining if/when Cunningham commits elsewhere. That said, I continue to believe that this offseason would be quiet/boring had Luke not decided to leave as we'd be looking very good had he been able to deal better with being away from home.

I saw Cheaney leaving as more of a move to go up higher on the coaching ladder. What else could he have done here?

It was still a serious blow to the program to have Calbert leave. No doubt about it. He could have been a mentor to our young guys. Someone with credibility for them to look up to. Someone who knows what "It's Indiana" really means.

Here's a few things Calbert knows about what "It's Indiana" really means...

The Bobby Knight Treatment: Choked Indiana University’s communications director after a negative press release; assaulted a Puerto Rican police officer while coaching Pan American Games in San Juan; threw a chair across the court to protest a referee’s call during game; told Connie Chung, “I think that if rape is inevitable, relax and enjoy it”; choked, punched and mock-bullwhipped Indiana players Michael Prince, Neil Reed and Calbert Cheaney, respectively; threw a potted plant at a female secretary; attacked assistant coach Ron Felling by throwing him out of a chair after overhearing him criticizing the basketball program in a phone conversation; fired a shotgun in the direction of James Simpson after he asked Knight to stop hunting too close to his home; bid farewell to an Indiana University crowd by saying, “When my time on earth is gone and my activities here are passed, I want them to bury me upside down and my critics can kiss my ass.”

Yes, it was necessary

Bob Knight is a huge part of Crean even being able to spout off about "It's Indiana".  3 of those 5 banners were hung while he was coach.  We went undefeated when he was the coach.  We started wearing the candy stripes when he was the coach.  Did he have issues?  Absolutely, his issues had issues, but that doesn't change the fact that he did a lot of good not only for the basketball program but for the university as a whole.
