D'Angelo Russell from OSU

Recommended Posts

O$U is getting a ridiculous talent with this kid. Silky stroke, swagger, good handles. High level competition playing for Monteverde. He will be a upgrade from Aaron Craft before too long, if not right away. I hate that we are currently, definitively behind Michigan State, Ohio State, Wisconsin, and Michigan as programs go. D. Russell will help keep things that way.

We recruited him early on when before he transferred from Monteverde.  Honestly, I am surprised he didn't end up in his true home state.  It was evident early on OSU was the leader.  I don't think you can really look at recruiting the way you are.  It isn't so much we are behind those schools recruiting wise.  We have got better talent than 3 of those 4 schools almost every year.  The problem has been the plan with those kids when they are here.  What is the end goal?  Bettering their resume for the NBA, or bettering IU?  Right now it seems that IU is a bi-product of how good of a NBA prospect some players become.  Whereas like UM who has been ultra competitive does great and then their NBA prospects bump up with improved play.  That is the perception I have right now of the current situation, but recruiting talent isn't the issue.  It's what we do with the talent and how that talent jives together.  I would be willing to bet if we quit having so many transfers and deflections we would be as good if not better than 3 of those 4 regularly.  Our freshman are good and probably better than those schools, but their seniors are better than our freshman if that makes sense.

It seems to me recruiting has pretty much taken care of itself and as a result we were usually pleased with the results.  I don't remember such conjecture on the subject as I have for this upcoming team.

I just know from where I am in Northwest In many of the good Ind. high school players have bolstered the like of the 2 Michigan schools to name just 2 schools from all positions that we could have been using.  I for one don't care for the reaching all over the country to find a player to bring in for one year particularly if they do not understand IU basketball tradition or for that matter could care less about it.  In my book its not program building.

Problem is, most of the high school kids do not know of IU basketball tradition.  Their earliest memory is probably the Sampson scandal.  We are talking about kids who at the earliest were born after 94.  No kid in high school ever watched Bob Knight at IU.  So, I think a kid from Maine understands IU basketball tradition as much as a kid from Evansville.  High School coaches could explain it all they want, but a kid will not understand it because he never had lived it.

The 2014 class should have been STACKED based on our programs momentum at the given time. I love ROJO and JB2. No complaints there, but everything was adding up to a stacked DUKE/Kansas/UNC like class. We have major holes we seem unable to fill while OSU, Michigan State are taking players we need/want. That last sentence spells it out clearly on where we stand compared to those schools.

2014 season was far below expectations and 2014 recruiting class is also far below expectations.

You're forgetting the German Collin Hartman, Max Hoetzel.  That totally takes it up a few notches, right?

Dont forget about Dawson, Payne, Mitch McGary (sp?), Glen Robinson II, I'll even throw in Spike Albrecht all from northern In,

Gary Harris, Trevon Bluiett, Zac Irvin, Smith-Rivera.  I want Coleman in 2015, but he'll probably end up at Michigan.  I'd even be okay with Hyron Edwards, but I don't see that happening either.

Deshaun Thomas is another one who went outta state, from Fort Wayne IN. even if you go back a few more years Sean May went to UNC instead of coming to play for IU like his dad did

IIRC Scott May didn't want his son playing for Mike Davis.  Not that I can blame him.

Zach Randolph from Marion to Mich St. We have missed on a lot of home grown talent thru the years.

Randolph didn't want to play for Knight.  Him and Sean Kline did not get along.  Sean was Knight's last commit.
