OT: UNLV's coach considering South Florida

Interesting. Pretty good class next year - Goodluck, Dwayne Morgan and Rashad Vaughn.

 

- Already facing an intriguing offseason, UNLV basketball coach Dave Rice is in the middle of more drama. Rice is considering accepting the coaching position at South Florida, which has offered a five-year contract for $1.2 million per year.

 

According to sources, the offer was extended within the past 24 hours. Rice is returning from an interview in Tampa, Fla., and could not be reached for comment.

 

It is expected he will meet with UNLV athletic director Tina Kunzer-Murphy tonight.

Sources indicated Rice was contacted by South Florida officials soon after the school rescinded an offer to Manhattan’s Steve Masiello, whose deal fell through after he failed a background check.

 

Rice’s contract at UNLV has three years remaining at $700,000 per year. A proposed two-year extension for Rice has not been forwarded to the Board of Regents.

 

The Rebels finished the season 20-13 and missed the NCAA Tournament for the first time in Rice’s three years.

If UNLV cannot offer a competitive contract to South Florida’s offer, Rice could depart, leaving Kunzer-Murphy to search for his replacement.

 

Former UCLA coach Ben Howland, Virginia Commonwealth coach Shaka Smart and Cal State Northridge coach Reggie Theus, a former Rebels star, are considered the top candidates

He's probably just jockeying for a raise. And who can blame him? If UNLV plays hardball though and he leaves, ohhhhh boy would I like to get back in the mix with Goodluck and Morgan.

Ohio State would be the favorite over us, but Max Hoetzel is Goodluck's teammate. There is certainly some chance.

Agree 100%. There is a reason he didnt pick us in the first place. Also, these "held back" claims became public recently but I was hearing that NV and Crean weren't gelling early on. These public comments support this story. WTH!

Tampa is an awesome city.... South Florida hasn't had much success, but they should be better. Tons of talent in Florida, great weather, great city, they are in the AAC. $1.2 million a year to coach at a big conference school in Florida? I'd take that over UNLV.

Word out of our camp about NV was always very positive, but during the GO recruitment word from NV was less than complimentary towards Crean.

@insidemdsports: If USF hires Mike Rice, Dwayne Morgan will ask out of UNLV signing and likely focus on Maryland, Louisville and Indiana, per a source.

Anyone else starting to get the feeling that some on the chemistry issues may have pertained to/derived from NV and his seemingly "me first" attitude? Would love to get back in on Goodluck but I don't see it happening.

I'm not sure if it was Noah being selfish as much as him not liking Crean. I don't know for sure, but that's how I look at it.

I am not following. Are you saying that Noah did not like Goodluck or did not like Crean when he was recruiting Goodluck?
