Some guy on ESPN was kind of dissing Crean tonight

Recommended Posts

Was talking about how he looks at things like inbound defense and how well you have your team prepared for your opponent with a week to prepare. Was comparing the difference in how coach Miller at Dayton successfully attacked Stanford's zone to the way Crean unsuccessfully attacked a similar zone in Syracuse last year.
I also can't help but think of the bizarre collapse at the end of the Illinois game last year. He just kind of insinuated that Miller is a superior coach to Crean.

Breaking a zone is simple, you either need to hit your 3 point shots or penetrate middle with a big that can shoot the midrange jumper. In last years game against Syracuse I remember distinctly one of the first plays of the game Zeller got the ball at free throw line, faced up and could have taken the jumper. He decided to instead attack the rim and got blocked. Knew from that moment it would be a long day. Fast forward a week later and one of first plays against Syracuse McGary got ball at free throw line turned and without hesitation made a jumper. Knew from that moment Michigan had that game. Absolutely. A shame we had one of the worst 3 pt shooting game of year, players had a face of panic as did coaches.

I always feel like the coaching blame for that game falls on the offense but personally I thought our defensive game plan was the reason we lost. Crean did not figure out a way to overcome their length. When we made the second half run, got within 10 they easily made a counter run because their length just destroyed us.

No doubt. Strong defense should always be important. Even as I watched the NE game in Bloomington this year, at the start, when Pitchford hit those lightly contested threes, I knew it was going to be a bad game.

IU had all the pieces/players, including experience, last year to beat that Cuse zone.

Agreed, but we were missing the most important piece to the puzzle. All the experience, NBA lottery picks, and 1000 point scorers could not overcome it. While I agree most of the "top" teams have the best talent, there is a more important reason why you see the same familiar teams when you get to sweet sixteen and beyond.

Dayton's road so far has been a gift. Let's see how Archie and his boys do against the top dog.

Dayton is such an efficient team because they aren't afraid to make the extra pass to score. Stanford was only allowing 55 ppg in the tournament. And Dayton scored 82. Because they share the ball. Basketball is a team sport! An even Michael Jordan had to have his teammates to win championships.

That's true. If your shots are falling this you need to attack. Get the ball preferably in the middle (free throw line) and have to your two bugs at short corner so that way if u draw a big from the block u can dish. "Making the extra pass" and hopefully then can make a power move to the bucket. U have to be very aggressive against a zone. Watching Syracuse who plays the best zone defense in college ball. They do sometimes not recover to the open gaps as fast as they should. That's when u need to penetrate and make a play.

If penetrating a true zone is so easy, why has it been so effective at Syracuse?

I agree it is a very effective defense when they recruit players to play it and have a coach that has used it for 35 years. My point that if a great coach has a week to prepare for it and has a team like IU's last year, I would put my $ on that team every time. As talented as Syracuse was this year, I knew they would underachieve just like they have in all but one. I think the jury is still out on Miller being a great coach, but you would have to agree with the wins he's had this year that he is a better coach than many of what the "top" programs have. The proof is in the product.

I would argue that they've faced a very tough road. Playing against some of the toughest defenses in country
