In about 48 hours I'll be kicking back in the beautiful BWCA for my annual winter ice fishing/break from technology trip!  I hope we have the same luck we had last year with the lake trout![attachment=3192:IMG_0136.JPG][attachment=3193:IMG_0147.JPG][attachment=3194:IMG_0151.JPG][attachment=3195:IMG_0152.JPG]

How much ice you got there?

At my home the ice is  pretty bad.  It just started freezing, and then we had 48 hours with temps in the 40's and rain.  I am hoping that when I get back from my trip I'll be able to walk on the water here.

Where I am going this week, it is a mixed bag.  The smaller and more shallow lakes have about a foot of ice, but the deep lakes just froze over this past weekend.  Since there is no telephone service for emergencies we will be limited to the shallow lakes.

Jealous for sure!  Hoping we get a good freeze this winter, never been ice fishing before and want to give it a try.  I have a buddy who loves it, and wants me to go with him.

It took living in Wisconsin and Minnesota about 15 years before I was willing to give it a try.  I readily admit to like fishing in the summer better.  However, doing anything to get out of the house in January - March is a welcome relief!

If you really want to try a winter fishing treat.  Head to Oshkosh, Wisconsin the 2nd weekend in February.  That is the weekend sturgeon spearing starts.  I mean what sport starts with Bloody Mary's or your favorite drink before sunrise?  There have been many years we couldn't get off the ice until sunset because we had to sober up.   (The season ends at noon.)

I am majorly bummed.  I just found out the ice is even worse where we are going than it is at home.  :( we won't be able to hit our usual spots.

Maybe we are sissies, but when you are in an area with no phones, and no chance for help, it doesn't make any sense to get out on the ice, if you are not 100% sure the ice is safe.

Well the fishing in the boundary waters was pretty slow.  Day one we used snow shoes and walked back about three miles to a lake we knew was safe.  Unfortunately we only caught one little lake trout.  We were going to camp back there for the night, but two of the guys didn't bring the gear to handle teens below zero.  :(

Day 2:  We hit a little lake that had been stocked with Rainbows, but we couldn't get any bites though I saw a few on the flasher.

Day 3:  After 3 days where the temperature never got above -10  we did some testing and found the ice was 8 inches thick, so we headed out to one of our normal haunts on Gunflint Lake.  However, there was no action at all.  Didn't even see any on the flasher.

Pictures? Come on guys

We didn't even think about a picture.  We caught the one laker after being on the lake for 10 minutes.  7 hours later we had caught nothing else, and were to depressed to think about a picture.   :(
