Steve Alford doing great in first year at UCLA

Recommended Posts

Alford needs to be judged going forward. Other jobs were not elite programs or even 2nd rate programs. More of a third tier type program. He has the tools and resources to really excel and he is off to a good start.

That isn't even close to being fair. So he just gets a pass? There are no passes, he should definitely be judged on how he has done so far

I'd probably be the same way if I saw him play, so I don't blame the people.

I agree for the most part. But he has proven himself a pretty good coach. I do give him a pass on Iowa. I have too many doubts that his coaching was the problem there. His hurdle that he has to clear is post-season wins.

And that's the clincher. He should have everything he needs to be highly successful. What he does with it is up to him.

I want nothing for the best for Alford, as he was one of my favorites growing up...
but there is no way he would leave UCLA, especially if he finds some kind of success there- not that
IU would try to get him...
and didn't I read that he has a tad bit of resentment towards IU, being that they didn't give him
as much as a peek when Knight was fired?

Regarding Alford, if you consider all his coaching jobs Iowa is the out lighter. Made Manchester a big winner, took SW Missouri state to sweet sixteen and had them good for a couple of years. Rebuilt the Lobos

Each place, besides Iowa, he has improved the teams and gotten them to the tourney. Has done well in his conference tourney, even at Iowa.

I do think he could be considered if he continues to build UCLA into what we expected of Crean here.

The bigger drawbacks are the Pierce issue and is he an upgrade from Crean. Pierce is hard to justify and I will not try other than to simply talk with him about it now and then decide on that. Is he an upgrade to Crean, right now it would be an uncertainty but there are reasons to suggest he could be (if you less at Iowa and look more at the other programs).

My list of candidates to replace CREAN, and i hope that is next year would be-
1. Brad Stevens
2. Calbert Chaney
3. Steve Alford
4. Tony Bennett

You have actually compiled the worst list on this website. Let's break it down shall we? 1. Stevens has an NBA contract and Boston is in with him 100% to rebuild this team. Not happening. I have no idea why IU fans are disillusioned with this. At all. 2. Cheaney has zero coaching experience. I love the guy, but he was director of BBall operations and is finishing his FIRST year as an assistant coach. 3. Alford just signed a contract at another University. You know what that means? We would have to buy out his contract as well as Crean's. Furthermore, why would he leave a gig he just started? Furthermore, read up on what he did in the Pierce situation at Iowa. The guy is a scumbag. 4. Bennett just got a #1 seed at Virginia. He hasn't proven one thing yet. And I guarantee even if he doesn't, UVA will lock him down for years.

The Pierce thing should automatically disqualify Alford. Don't care if Crean wins another game. I'd rather keep him than replace him with a coach who doesn't take sexual assualt seriously.

I really can't see why people would want Alford or Cheaney to replace Crean, aside from being IU legends.  Alford hasn't done anything as a coach and Cheaney has only been an assistant for one year.

Alford hasn't done anything as a coach? You might want to brush up on your history before speaking....I put his coaching record up against Creans any day...

I would then add that Alford has never been past a sweet sixteen while crean has been to a final four.

I am not an anti Alford, but how exactly has he done more than Crean?

He has done comparable perhaps at small schools but his first chance at a school in a big conference he did not shine. He is doing well in year 1 at UCLA and I would love to see it continue but he did well at Iowa early too.

Curious as to your reasoning behind your claim that Alford's coaching career has been better than Creans.

Crean at least went to the Final Four, it very well may have been a fluke (and I think it was since he's never maintained success or gotten particularly close since) but he made it.  The furthest Alford has made it is the Sweet 16, unless you consider that a real accomplishment he really hasn't done anything.

He did win the MWC 4 times in 6 years, but in the B1G he never did better than tied for 2nd and finished 6th or worse 4 times in 8 years.  Although I think he may have won the BTT once.  So, at best, he hasn't done much.
