Any Golfers around?

Recommended Posts

Been getting that itch to play again and can't wait for some warmer weather. A big time golfer and try to play 2-3 times per week if I can do it. Nothing more relaxing than hitting the links.

Bought the new RocketBallz irons from TalyorMade last season and it dropped my handicap from a 14 down to a 6.5. That obviously wasn't the only reason, but damn new clubs did wonders for me. I had been using some old clubs (still nice but were brand new in 96). Technology has come a LONG way.

I used to be a big golfer. I worked at a course in southern Illinois, Mt. Carmel Golf Course. I played 4 times a week, and in one summer my handicap went from 16 to a 5. I developed a beautiful iron game, hit everything with a little draw (I'm a lefty), and was almost always in the fairway. What kept me from being better was 80-20 yards in. I still can't get rid of them, but I developed the shanks. I remember playing in a big money game, and I was 5 under with 8 holes left..... I pulled a Sergio Garcia. I went from 5 under to 2 over par 73. Still my best round ever, but I was on fire. For 7 of the last 8 holes, I couldn't hit my irons. Still irks me, and that was 4 years ago. Now, I'm probably an 18. I played maybe 5 times a year. Wish I was around, I would def go golfing with you. Sent from my DROID4 using BtownBanners mobile app

I like going out to the 9-hole course in town and playing a time or two a week. Not serious by any means. I don't keep track of handicap or anything like that. I go out there for fun and get pretty pumped if I get a par, if that tells you anything. Walking the course is a pretty solid workout, too.

I go about once a month.  I'm actually playing hookie Tuesday with a friend to hit the course.  The boss is out of town, the workers will play.  Lucky for me, my job keeps me out of the office every day so it's easy to sneak off whenever I like.  It's also good to live in the only warm state in the country the last few weeks, the courses are always open.

Many courses here in Colorado are open year round weather (ie snow) permitting. The sun is so warm that even if it's in the 40s the snow feels like it's in the 60s. I remember riding my motorcycle to work on New Year's Eve. Lol

Thought I'd revive this thread since it's starting to warm up in my area and I've been thinking of going.

Anyone got preferred equipment, i.e. clubs/gloves/balls?

My clubs are a cheapo set I got when I first started playing, some brand I literally can't even find on Google.  Guess they could be clones.

For gloves I've used a Taylormade, a Walter Hagan and a Nike Durafeel.  Of those three the Nike is absolutely my preferred glove, I have the WH still but I never use it.

I've been wanting to try the Nike Vapor Black or RZN line for golf balls.  I'm currently using the cheapest ones I could find at Wal-Mart, I don't know the brand and they may or may not be recycled.  I was playing a round once and found a Titleist in the rough and thought "score", then I lost it the very next swing SMH.

My two cents:

If you are to by new equipment, I would go to a manufacturers trail day at a golf course. My daughter lettered 4 years in HS and when we bought her "good" equipment that's what we did. We bought her first driver at a store with a n indoor cage to try it out. It looked good on their computer but on the course it had a wicked slice. Went to a trial day and talked to the reps from several club makers and finally found a driver she could hit. (And she could just kill it. Like a bb!) I was amazed and how much difference there was between how she hit the different manufacturers. We did the same with her irons. This dropped her score ten strokes. (FYI- it was a Callaway driver and Ping irons)

As far as balls, I've talked to reps, college coaches and club pros, for weekend players , you don't need the $40 an dozen balls. My daughter played the two piece Srixon ball. They played great. I began using them.

>Btw- after 7-8 years of the youth golf circuit, I hate the game and so does daughter. This is why I never pushed my son into AAU basketball. :)

There's a golf store around here that will sometimes have older display model irons on sale for $10 a piece, Nike/Callaway/Mizuno different brands, and they also have a place where you can try them indoors.  I've never invested in good equipment because I'm not a good player and can't justify the expense.

I wouldn't spend $40 bucks on balls, the ones I was considering were between 20-30.  The ones I use were probably around $10-15.
