(2016) C Thon Maker

Recommended Posts

I thought a lot of you guys didn't like players like Thon...the typical Kentucky recruit that is just a mercenary and not a real student. An nba player.

But when he might go to IU he's awesome, the minute he commits to Kentucky it was all about the $$$

Me personally, I think we should start offering whatever Kentucky is....

I kind of see what you're saying (especially with the handler), but Thon has been outspoken about how much he values academics. He's extremely smart and well-spoken and seems like an all around good guy. I hope Ed Smith doesn't give this kid and his brother a bad image.

This kid is gonna take basket weaving and finger painting first semester and you know it.

I have zero problem with that btw

So do the majority of our players. My point wasn't the classes he will take, it's that "he" isn't a UK type of kid. His handler is making him be one.

Don't all the uk kids have handlers also?? So wouldn't Thon be exactly like a uk kid?

Nothing typical about Thon Maker. The kid escaped a brutal civil war, his parents were left behind. Moved to a brand new country (Australia), learned a new language and learned a new sport (basketball). He transitioned over to the United States. He has faced more in his 17/18 years of life than many do after an entire life. The kid speaks multiple languages as well. Nothing typical about him at all.

That was interesting, I wasn't aware of those facts. That actually does change my opinion of the value placed on education by him, coming from a place where he couldn't take that for granted because he possibly didn't have it

Well considering his handler saved him and his brother from Civil War and obscene poverty, I would say no. That doesn't change the fact that Ed Smith has, at the very least, a shady background, but the Maker situation is far from any UK player's. And I don't know which UK players have handlers. Maybe you could provide that info.

Thats why its useful to do some research before making assumptions. Not a dig on you but just a general statement

You are right about Thon and Matur escaping the civil war and poverty of Sudan, but Ed Smith had nothing to do with it. Ed Smith didn't mean Thon till about 10 years later when Thon was 14

His uncle set the whole thing up for Thon, Matur and their aunt to escape to Uganda, and they were later accepted into Australia as refugees. Thon was around 5 when they escaped

Would be a hell of a movie. I'm readily awaiting his retirement when he's running low on money and writes an autobiography.

Sadly his story is one of hundreds of thousands. There are movies out there that pretty much show what he went through. Ive taken a lot of classes on this time period in Sudan and africa and its quite sad. We actually studied the Dinka people a lot. Thon Maker is a Dinka. Average height of most Dinka men is Thon's height hahah
