Michael Jackson sounded perfect on his solo early on with Quincy Jones. Remarkable.

And seeing Bob Dylan so out of his element was something. And I love a lot of Dylan music

If you’re not into Americana this is worth listening to once just to admire the talent. If you are, this is freaking great. Somewhere down the road Chris Thile is going to make a wonderful subject for a career documentary. Dude is a real live genius and has played with everybody across a ridiculous spectrum of music.

As he entered the final weeks of his show, Dave Letterman had many of his favorite musical guests on. He asked Tracy to do "Stand By Me."

That is so cool. Been lucky enough to see almost every artist of mine and the subsequent generation that I’ve really wanted to, but never saw her. She just didn’t tour. But if there is 1 song by 1 artist I could see it might be Chapman doing “Born to Fight.”  What an incredible piece of protest music that is.

Okay, so I decided to catch the wave that is Taylor Swift. Added her two best-reviewed albums; folklore and evermore to my Spotify library.

My thoughts? Summarized in two points of emphasis:

1. Both are pretty good and lyrically very good.
2. Both sound like Taylor Swift has been working with (it is so) and listening to A TON of Bon Iver. Like, a mountain of Bon Iver until Bon Iver is sonically embedded in her songwriting brain. And therefore Bon Iver-like stuff is exactly what is sonically expressed on both albums.

She's worked with Bon Iver on a few songs I know of. I don't actively seek her stuff out but she is legitimately talented; and from what she's done for her Eras tour etc, seems to be a pretty good person.

Yes; she worked with Justin Vernon. She clearly is a Vernon super-fan and sought him out. And Bon Iver is some good stuff. 

And yes, her super-likable persona + Bon Iver-like material with a different lead singer is a lethally effective combination.

Made the mistake of telling my wife, who is a fan, that I hadn’t listened to her at all, so she played me her faves for something like 3 hrs driving on vacation. I know I’m not the target demographic here, but I don’t really get it. She writes some interesting stuff. Found the vocals solid but unremarkable. They were beautifully produced. But I don’t find her compelling and the mass obsessive fandom is lost on me. But we hear and relate to what hear and relate to. And she certainly handles it all effortlessly, so good for her.

I had this exact conversation with my wife, minus the entire 3 hour listening session. Left with basically the same takeaways. I think I'd be much less confused if Swifties weren't so insane. 

What I did find compelling was scrolling through the AFC Championship game thread on the Taylor Swift subreddit. I highly recommend it. Just a bunch of really nice (albeit Swifties, so...a tad "out there") folks that hadn't ever watched a football game working through it together.

She got screwed on being able to own the first six albums that she did for her old record label before she moved to Universal to do her next few albums and so she has been re-recording her old albums so that she can maintain the rights to them but she has to change a few things so has to not run into legal issues or something like that. There was a big to do about the situation at the time.

From a daughter who grew up with her (almost literally) -- it's her story telling / the lyrics. She's beyond talented in her storytelling, the 'swifties' sing all her lyrics word for word throughout her concerts (my now 20 year old has been to 3 of her concerts, lol). I feel similarly, her music is mostly pop to me now (formerly a fair amount of country), but yeah, her songwriting - storytelling for her generation is genuinely special.

My musical contribution (for myself) during this downturn in IU ball, turned back to my favorite guitarist, Hendrix.

Worked through and now have The Wind Cries Mary down (I'm a guitarist, used to play in bands) melody and the lead, and both are just plain beautiful. Hendrix uses inversions in his chords as he works up the neck, he was so far ahead of his time, the GOAT.

I recently picked up my first electric guitar. I am learning completely on my own and finally able to play just two or three riffs. It’s so tough but I am just sticking with it the best I can.

Hendrix is definitely the best guitarist in history. I love Clapton but there different players, he's a more technical player while Hendrix played like it was an extension of himself.

Both played Fender Stratocasters, a very versatile guitar with the right configuration, but Hendrix played a right handed instrument flipped over.
