Survey: Indiana University Bloomington ranked one of the worst colleges for free speech

INDIANAPOLIS — The sixth annual College Free Speech rankings are out — and one central Indiana college took a hit, while another is being praised. 

Indiana University Bloomington was ranked one of the worst colleges for free speech. Meanwhile, Purdue University is ranked second-best. The survey results were released Tuesday, Sept. 9 by the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) and College Pulse.

The survey ranked 257 schools based on 68,510 student responses to a "wide array of free speech-related questions," according to FIRE. 

Other Indiana colleges on the rankings included the University of Notre Dame, which ranked No. 238, and DePauw University, which ranked No. 18. 

“This year, students largely opposed allowing any controversial campus speaker, no matter that speaker's politics,” FIRE President and CEO Greg Lukianoff said in a news release. “Rather than hearing out and then responding to an ideological opponent, both liberal and conservative college students are retreating from the encounter entirely. This will only harm students' ability to think critically and create rifts between them. We must champion free speech on campus as a remedy to our culture's deep polarization.”

I don’t know how they actually measure this because some of these universities let their campuses go to complete H3ll last year before doing something about it, meaning “free speech” was at its apex there until the students got out of hand and the students “free speeching” for a particular cause, a very well coordinated and externally funded cause, were told to chill. IU got ahead of that nonsense and didn’t end up on CNN for three months letting the campus become a mess. That doesn’t mean IU has become a beacon of closemindedness and anti-free speech, but it’s a narrative some folks can now run with.

Having been around those Boston campuses on that list, I can confidently state that those ‘“less free speech” campuses largely are the ones that push hard at the limits of free speech (and that’s their prerogative). Whereas my kid at University of Florida is on a campus where almost no one pushes at limits, and therefore those UF kids don’t feel restricted.

It's unsurprising to see IU where it is on this list based on the campus bans, sniper on the union, board changes, etc. IMO the survey is not an objective measure of free speech on campus, but it does offer a snapshot for a moment in time.

I think that survey data validity is at an all time low, especially when one is measuring perception vs actual reality and the influence of TikTok. For example, BYU will suspend a student for drinking coffee. I wonder what their position/ranking on free speech truly is?

Tying this back to the “topic du jour,” many of these lowly ranked universities have condoned some horrific speech from students and professors alike the last two years. The perception of universities having some standard to quell disruptive protests does not necessarily equate to having prohibitive rules on free speech. In fact, I would say some of the universities ranked around IU have had embarrassingly lax free speech policies. And don’t even get me started on the stats when you break down the skewed political affiliation of professors and invited campus speakers…

It's certainly okay to feel differently about the surveys findings. Just sharing the results of it.

Of course. I’m not attacking you, and this is an interesting data point for the university. I’d much rather hear about how IU is managing today’s campus life through message boards than on national TV.

For sure and I broadly agree with your statement about perception not always reflecting reality. Interesting that Purdue was ranked so highly and IU so lowly. Curious how free speech policies / climate differ between the schools. In any case I'm skeptical this "data" ever gets taken into consideration by university admins at IU or elsewhere for that matter.

At risk of derailing this thread and getting myself banned…I’m sure the demographics of the student body also influence the survey results.

Meh. Pretty elite group of schools there in the Bottom 10, in traditionally left-leaning hubs of the country. Honestly this is kind of a compliment of the student body makeup.

To Stu’s point, I’d imagine schools like Auburn, U Mississippi, Liberty, SMU are near the top of this list. Just a guess
