Seems we're getting closer to being able to have an opinion on the team. Wonder what people think of this assessment.

Seems like a team that should be decent to good at perimeter defense, and average to decent at interior defense. It is a real question mark if Tucker DeVries is the closest thing you have to a rim protector: Bailey has size but just has not been a threat to block shots. I think if this team wants to be good on defense, that a lot will rely on Sam Alexis living up to his promise.

Offensively, they look like they could be lethal; literally could be the best volume 3pt% team since Crean. Assembly Hall is starved for that style of play, and so I think the ingredients are there for a special season in terms of fan support if everything breaks right. Just that a couple of those defensive question marks could hold back this team from its full potential.

Looking forward to the year!

Hope you are correct on the offensive side.  On paper they look great.  D is a big ? for me.  But yes, I am looking forward to seeing what this team can do.

Goode a starter? hmmm

I'm assuming he is because of his experience, and the level of shooting that he showed last year. IF this IU team is really good, that will be because of their ability to splash threes; on offense I love the idea of Wilkerson, Goode, DeVries and Bailey on the floor at the same time. Think they're dangerous enough to live with them being less effective on defense.

I'm not really big on that grouping, to be honest. Doesn't mean I'm right, though. I do appreciate Goode's awareness, his love for IU, and obviously his shooting ability!

Having said that.... I wonder how much we will "play through Bailey"... his usage was astronomical at Davidson, and almost 4 assists a game is just crazy. Goode can for sure stretch the floor.

Only thing with Goode... every guy we've added is better off the bounce than he is.

Think that's true; Would think that Bailey, Conerway, Wilkerson and DeVries would likely be high-usage guys, and so my question would be the fit around them. My putting Goode in there is more about my hesitancy about how much trust to put in the other guys who haven't shown so much at this level.

Kind of surprised there isn't a legit "big" but outside of that I really can't complain. Competition is going to be a lot of fun for this group. Just a fun guess on April 29 at the starting 5 based on rankings/stats/watching the player:

Conerway

Wilkerson

Dorn

DeVries

Bailey

Bench in order: Miles, Harris, Enright, Drake, Alexis, Sisley

If Goode comes back, he probably moves to 6th man.

Side note: Anyone else happy the media isn't ranking this team? I've seem them nowhere in those top 25s and Lundari had us as a bubble team in his first bracketology.

Just from what I've watched..I would not be surprised if Reed Bailey turns out to be our best overall player. Doesn't mean he will lead Indiana in scoring and what not. I just think he's going to have a major impact. Almost think the 4 you listed will be our best 4 players.

All things being equal, I’d probably like to have the talent and experience that makes outsiders want to rank the team. But I guess I can see a little value in coming in under the radar.

It just doesn't work out for IU. 2012-2013 #1 all season long and lost in the Sweet 16. Crean's last year they were ranked pretty high in the preseason and didn't even make the tournament. Same with our team last year.

I like our additions but bottom line: they haven't done squat to earn a top 25 ranking and be patted on the back all off-season. Competition should be fun! I think the top 4 is likely DeVries, Wilkerson, Bailey and Conerway. Spots 4-10 will be a fight!!

It's year one so my expectations are low: Safely make the tournament. Be freaking competitive again. (see Louisville last year although they were in a bad conference). Anything else is the cherry on top.

because of OGs injury

But... we aren't close to the only team replacing a lot.... I couldn't imagine us not being in T25 lists to start the year.

Weren't we ranked in the top 10 or close at the start of the 16-17 season and was at #3 after the Kansas win when they went to Fort Wayne and lost that game?  It is the B1G season when the wheels came off and lead to Crean being fired which I still don't understand how it fell apart.  Anunoby got hurt, but they still had Blackmon, Bryant, and Morgan on the team.  They were ranked high at the beginning of the season because of the season before and returned the core from that was 15 - 4 in the B1G and winning the regular season conference.  They had a good team coming back that warranted the ranking while we don't really know what we are going to get from this team yet.  You can see it on paper, but you don't know till they hit the floor.  I get why we won't be a ranked team till some games are played, and it is earned..

They were kind of in a free fall prior to the OG injury though losing something like 5 of their 7 games against power conference schools before he got hurt.

Yeah; Anunoby got hurt, but one would hope to be more than one OG Anunoby away from losing to IPFW...

Hope the power stays on for the entire trip. Granddaughter got caught there a week or so ago and had to extend her stay a couple of days because of the power outage
