Maryland Last Possession - IU Defense

Recommended Posts

Lots of consternation about the last offensive possession against Maryland, as there should be. But I offer you a screen shot of the last defensive possession; the one where Rodney Rice hit the winning three.

Below is a screen shot of the moment Rodney Rice shot the ball.

  • Leal is in proper position to close out on his man.
  • Myles Rice is trying to go over, not under the screen as he should.
  • Gallo might have gotten out to Gillespie.
  • Ballo and Reneau? Aye caramba:

Looking at that.....Rice shouldn't have even shot that as the better play was the easy feed to Queen for a layup uncontested.

If you watch the full play, Rice didn't have any option but to go over the screen because Ballo didn't switch and got in Rice's way.

FWIW, Gillespie still got away with a travel.

I thought last year we suffered because of the overall personality of the team lacking toughness. Then there's this year's group. Doesn't it all go back to the culture of the team. It's lack of desire to win at all costs. Several of our key players, ones with loads of talent, lack the ability to process on both ends and seem to have zero since of urgency. The last offensive play that we drew up wasn't changed after we went from timeout, in bounds on the side to then under the basket, but we made multiple substitutions in that time which would tend to cause confusion. There is definitely a noticeable disconnect now and it goes back to the lack of a culture and inability to have one or two things that we define our program by.

It is worth noting if you watch the shot attempt that Leal actually ends up being in pretty good rebounding position when the shot goes through the net.  When Gillespie got into the lane (and traveled damn it) IU had four players collapsing on him.  The kick out went to Rodney Rice but IU had time to get back on him -- notice that when the shot goes up, Gillespie is twenty-four feet out, so he had time to go from the middle of the lane to that spot.  Galloway's positioning is okay -- he's got time to close in on Gillespie if the pass goes his way.  Rice had collapsed in on the drive (not sure why, he's not going to come from an off position and block him).  Maryland had Reese out, I assume to draw Ballo away from the rim.  Reneau isn't where he should be but honestly there isn't a good spot for him to be in -- either leave Queen open underneath or Rice even more open.  The two biggest issues.....why is Ballo so far out defending Reese?  and Rice rotating in caused a jam between he and Ballo.

Wild to give up a game losing 3 when all 5 defenders are above the FT line extended (even leaving Queen wide open underneath)

5 on 4 and still giving up a wide open 3 to the ballhandler. Lol…

That would give a good coach an aneurysm. Woody was probably non-plussed

Woodson probably just said he can't defend it for them.

Maryland had their choice of open looks, Rice for 3 or Queen with no one in the same time zone down low.
