Just my opinion, but I think that a coach with the ability to win four D2 championships is appealing because of the demonstrated winning culture, not necessarily the play style or X's and O's philosophy (which I agree is an important consideration and would need to be discussed during the hypothetical hiring process). Basically, I think he's more than capable of adjusting his schemes to fit the level of competition. What makes me excited about him as a candidate is the fact he has already won at a very high level so he will be able to lead effectively and take care of the off court things we don't see, but are required to win big.

I'm definitely open to other candidates, but I'm hard pressed finding many higher quality ones that seem feasible.

Idk maybe I’m jaded by Archie. He did in fact win at a smaller school. It’s been 10 years now of slow disgusting basketball.  Candidates will pop up throughout the year. I really liked Schertz last year from his style. I think recruiting takes care of itself with NIL so we need someone that plays open free flowing basketball with a lot of 3s because you’re at a disadvantage if you don’t play like that.

That's fair... I don't think this guy is remotely comparable to Archie. He actually has won championships.

I'm totally with you on wanting a faster/more modern style of basketball though.

I mean goodness gracious, I just want watching IUBB to be fun again!

They play super slow and don’t take many 3s but they win. Probably better than what we have now but I think we can do better.

I don’t think it’s necessarily slow, his teams just look for the absolute best shot possible and a lot of the time that ends up being layups. His teams play beautiful basketball

Haha they’re 320 in pace this year. I think it’s just what I want to see personally but honestly if he came here and won I wouldn’t care how we played. But yes that is some beautiful ball movement.

My goodness, against IU they would've had their choice of wide open looks on that one play.

The head coach that can be the face of the program is important. The personality of the coach will be the personality of the team. Then having the ability to spot and hire a staff that can break down film design a game plan and implement an offense and defense with options. They have to be cohesive with the coaches culture and be able to spot the players that fit that culture and successfully recruit them.

Accountability and details  + talent

I don't think Dolson will follow the Cignetti hire for the next BB coach. He'll want a proven winner at the high major level. Or Brad Stevens.

I am not saying you are wrong, but I don't think someone like that will be available or willing to jump at the IU job.

NIL is the key. Look at football. Michigan and OSU are taking players from SEC schools now that it’s legal to pay. IU has the money to be a very attractive job outside of programs like Kansas, Duke etc.

Give a modern coach a $6 mil+ budget and that’s a big incentive to someone working on scraps now.
