Where do marginal players land (or do they)? Will Sandvik, Bargesser, Meister, et al. get offers? From like Murray State? Would they want to play there? Ava Learn was a big success there (or Jordyn Poole to Dayton), but are most B10 players willing to move to that level?

I think the first round all go to mid majors to get minutes and points. Maybe bottom level major conference programs and play most of the 40 minutes. Yarden might get to go to some place cool with her Role here as a freshman. Even yarden will not be a star at a program beyond Indiana. Too slow, too limited

I disagree. She isn't a batman on a good team.. Top 15 team.

She can be a Robin on a good team, at this juncture, and if she's your "3" ... your team is very good.

Last 9 games- 16p 7r 3a eFG% 57.9 FT% 91.3

I'm willing to bet her usage in those games was heavy, as well.

T. Moren and staff coached Garzon (very good ability) up along with some of the other limited ability players.
Regarding Garzon….As long as she has some good players to play with at Indiana (that’s a significant if…but I do think Indiana will be as good next year as this year at a minimum and probably better) I am not so sure she will not regress in another program for one year.

1. If it’s an excellent program with excellent players she may not be a featured player kind of getting lost in the shuffle (maybe not as competitive as she thinks she is).  2.  If it’s just an average team of players then defenses can focus on her and frustrations set in.

Conclusion:  T. Moren and staff are/were a security blanket for her allowing her to expand, shoot pretty much at will, give her challenging expectations.  An additional 3 specific portal players with talent and two of those being with size besides Spreen…. Garzon’s best bet is staying with IU Ladies basketball program if a couple things happen in the transfer portal.

(Intangible:  Garzon plays a little bit temperamental and sensitive).

Bridesmaid again.  Next Lady up. (Surely other/s at least 6’3” or 6’4” have been looked at as options…..It’s not that the best are not wanted but the best have to choose IU Ladies.

I have info on both NIL and Yarden via a couple things I have heard and putting some puzzle pieces together.

I would advise everyone to not get their hopes up over big names in portal. IU is low on NIL and doesn't have enough cash to get the top players.

Good news is Moren finally gets it and that her culture won't override NIL as she assumed for so long. Ironically Brenda Frese had this same issue at Maryland a couple of years ago and assumed her years of winning were enough, but now adjusted and getting biggest names in portal and has healthy NIL for Merkle and other stars she has grabbed recently.

IU is behind in fundraising but going all in for donations now to program. Will use next season finally to up fundraising and NIL and would expect a bunch of huge names for 2026-2027 after there has been time to fundraise. Moren had to learn for herself as is human nature that no matter how good your culture is, money is needed today. Alarm bells were sounded to her midseason but she said she was fine and was afraid to ask for help.

Unlike Woodson though at least she is willing to adjust and final presser was her more or less admitting that. However, will take time to catch up on amounts and get top players in again. This has a great chance to be a redemption story similar to Frese but could well be a rough season in the interim.

As for Yarden, plenty in Jewish Community offered NIL to keep her but she was 'unbuyable' here. She saw situation for 2025-2026 was going to be rough and wants to move on to win a title and not struggle on a mediocre team her senior season. Whole situation here with Yarden is one of the reasons and catalysts Moren finally saw that her culture won't override NIL.

This will take time to build up similar to men but will be a bit slower since getting needed NIL for women as harder to snap fingers.

Penn State transfer Gracie Merkle, who visited Indiana, just announced her commitment to Maryland.

Depressing. Whole new round of being drubbed in the recruiting race. Whatever Maryland is doing, IU needs to do that.

At press conference after crushing UCLA, Geno quoted Hank Stram: "in order to win it all, you have to have it all". Means you have to have great players, throughout the roster.

They are trying to follow Maryland and having to reinvent. See my post above. Just takes time.

Is this something that will pay dividends in the high school class of 2026?

Some decent options there and whiff in that class could make it a much harder hill to climb to get back to where the program is accustomed

Should for both 26 and 27 class for high school and portal assuming they can raise the money. They are working at it but essentially starting from scratch.

Thats hopeful at least - they’ve gotten a few studs on campus, hopefully more this summer too.

Whats the approach for this off-season then? Take fliers on undergrads like Spreen and Stotjin or try to get mid-majors upper classman to try to salvage at least an NIT appearance?

Pretty much at this point they may well be forced to do that.

Also it would be WBIT for women (where finals are in Indy) as primary tournament behind NCAA now that Minnesota just won. WNIT is a ring below that now and would probably decline a bid for that. Gonna have to build back up what has been so successful for a decade. Sometimes an 11th yr coach has to adjust with times and seems finally willing to do that.

So, getting to the top is one thing but sustainability is another.  The word that comes to mind…..Disarray.

Arizona coach to SMU.  Arizona coaching job is open.

For IU to just be figuring out NIL matters in womens hoops is either incredibly on par for our administration or a we don’t care that much decision.

I guess a proud Moren could just renounce the whole idea, which is unfortunate because now we are totally behind the 8ball.

Can’t spend big for every sport. IU trying to help Volleyball, Soccer, Swimming. The money will spread thin.

I guess we could be happy as a fanbase to run to 1/4 of B1G and try to re-run that but teams will get poached.

They really kinda dropped the ball on this after getting fans to completely buy in.

Hopefully the younger kids (Cavey, Maya, Faith) get a lot of run, like back in the Buss/Cahill days
