They “Retired” Coach Woodson Thread

So Kentucky is set to hire a guy with zero tournament wins. And some people thought Dusty May wasn’t good enough for us to hire. Lmao.

At least we (hopefully) won’t embarrass ourselves by throwing silly numbers at dudes like Hurley and Drew who aren’t going anywhere. Rumor was Hurley got offered 12.5 a year. And given that Mark Pope is getting 5.5 I’d believe it. If Dusty May wins big at Michigan and they commit to him, this is going to be a watershed moment for the program. Didn’t quote it but @Home Jersey is right on the mark above. Maybe Dusty will come home after a while winning at Michigan, but the risk of him being successful elsewhere at a P5 and  never coming far outweighed the risk of firing Woody and taking a chance on him.

Money and program prestige simply don’t matter like they used to in the age of football TV contract money and NIL for recruiting. The built in and fundamental advantages to taking a job like IU or Kentucky simply do not exist as they once did. Kentucky just found that out. It can also mean that finding an established P5 successful coach is not as important to a rebuild, which they may also find out. The days of “blue bloods” simply opening a checkbook and spending more than schools not as committed to basketball just does not exist as it once did. That said,

Show Woody the door and offer Dan Hurley a billion dollars and make him say no.

As I said elsewhere, Kentucky has the Pope and Indiana has the Dope!

What was the major problem last season? Shooting. Have we upgraded shooting no we haven't so far.

We have more talent that is for sure. We have better guards.

If it was me Conwell, Hickman, and Humrichous would have been bigger priorities for me.

But what do I know I'm just some dumb poster on BTB

My #1 concern coming into last season was shooting. This season may be the same. Disappointing.

And we might go out and get a shooter but you have so many guys who are going to get playing time now, you've already kind of mismanaged the roster again.

Also, I guess all posters can agree that with this roster so good then there is no reason why we can't finish in the top 3 of the Big Ten, and if we don't then Mike Woodson needs to be fired.

I mean all I'm reading on the IU interest thread is how loaded we are. So it can't be a talent problem this season

Honestly I don't know ... is it too late for players to enter the portal after these commitments are signed?

Rice and Carlyle are ballers. Ballers shoot and figure out how to strengthen the weaknesses in their game.  I agree that they were not good three point shooters as freshmen, but that was as freshmen. The jury is out on how much their three point % will rise. Rice has a pretty niiiice stroke - with a post presence (or two) his % is all but assured to improve.

Will still have 3 schollies open but probably won't use them all. Also if you're a shooter are you coming here to sit?

We aren't loaded yet. All we have added is Tucker.

Get Rice, Carlyle, Tucker, and Ballo?

Yup. We're loaded.

i think the thing Woodson has going for him is the B1G isn’t a very good conference. It should be another down year for the league. None of the new programs are going to add much.

Malik

McKenzie

Bryson

Transfer

Trey

That leaves about 3 more rotational players. Is Woodson banking on Newton and Leal being the shooters? I don’t anticipate Indiana playing more than 8 guys.

If you're a 6'8" stretch 4 shooter you wouldn't be sitting on the current roster, even if we added Rice, Carlyle, and Ballo.

If the crystal balls happen?

  1. Rice
  2. Carlyle
  3. Galloway
  4. Tucker
  5. Mgbako
  6. Reneau
  7. Ballo
  8. Stretch 4 shooter addition

LOTS of juice in that group.

Im a shooter and I want the ball in my hands all the time in my driveway, I don't share. Then I remember the coach says he doesn't have to run plays for me to shoot, not his job. I'll only get my shot on a fast break or when Ballo throws it back out to me. Malik won't because once he gets the ball he is going to the basket even on a 3-1 fast break to draw the foul. The rain has stopped here in "the tropics", I think I will go out and shoot some hoops, Mike might contact me when he is down here playing golf this summer.

But to answer the question ... NO I am not coming to sit. For me "to cook" I need that basketball in my hands on the floor outside the 3 point line. I can't do s*** from the bench.

Twitter is of the charts today. If I based next year off twitter posters I would expect a top two finish in the big ten and 25 wins minimum. So really with these sky high expectations now Woodson should be expected to make a sweet sixeteen minimum.

Watch Woodson do just enough to keep his job after next year. A tournament appearance and first round exit 100% will get him another year. Ugh. Should’ve hired a real coach but kept the same NIL amount.
Given these sky high expectations I am reading about that would be a failure.

You know with the possibilities of players named that are a crystal ball confirmation to IU, I am not sure even Woodson could screw up a roster that has a good chance of happening. That is a scary thought. Like Trish mentioned, the B1G will be down but IMO adding Oregon who is always fast and athletic, UCLA, maybe they will not be that far down as a conference. USC and UW are question marks with new coaches. He will have NO excuses if the names mentioned are here next season and a first round exit would be a real disappointment. Yet good enough for another $1M/yr raise and a possible extension.

I’m tired of Mike Woodson the person in addition to his mediocre coaching at this point, so there’s really nothing he could do to get me to start supporting him again. I just want him gone.

I agree 100%. I was surprised by his attitude. His Senior Night speech was the icing on the cake for me, yet I had written him off long before that.
