IUWBB 2023 B1G Tournament - March 1-5, 2023

Recommended Posts

Just have a feeling we're going to be pushed to a 2 seed. The Clark PR campaign  will be too hard to ignore.

Every other team fighting for a 1 seed lost with Indiana (besides SC) so IU is safe for a 1 seed. SC, IU, Stanford, and Iowa/UConn/VA Tech fighting for the last spot I think. IU should still be 2 overall.

ESPN bracketologist still has us as a No. 1 seed -- in Greensboro.

But with all the other losses, he has Virginia Tech moving up to a No. 1. As much as I detest Caitlin Clark and Iowa, I would think they'd be a much more fitting top seed. I live out here in ACC country and watch a women's game every so often -- it's not that good.

The argument is who is the best conference in women basketball?

Answer:  Big Ten

Conclusion:  Big Ten Regular Season Champs with some really excellent wins = # 1 Seed.

Conclusion:  Big Ten Tournament Champs back to back on a winning streak with some really good wins over coming earlier losses with a dominant player  = # 1 Seed.

I am in ACC country as well and agree that the ACC, this year, is not what it was.  Pretty much see the top teams (VT and ND, when healthy) at fifth or sixth in the Big.

Dream ending #1 beating Iowa for the national championship. Dream ending #2 beating anyone for the national championship.

That would be a Ladies Big Ten Basketball Dream.

My take on Clark:  Hear all kinds of both, positive and negative on Clark.  Yes, she makes mistakes that is overcome by how GREAT a player she is.  Clark has not only mastered her basketball skills but has also mastered psychological skills as well (all of her floppy, complaining to refs and everything else she does to compete for any kind of edge she can get just like anything, really…cards, boxing greats, politics etc etc etc) plus I am sure she gets dogged on as well.  Overall, it’s worked well for her and Iowa and she has the guts to be the way she is.  So if she gets away with so called different things, why not do it.  If she is on your team or side you probably love her.

Of course I wanted IU Ladies to win vs Ohio State.  However, there is a mystery surrounding Holmes in my opinion.  And without her being able to go in typical healthy Holmes fashion though the Ohio State loss was bad and it hurt….playing a Iowa team hitting on all cylinders maybe the Ohio State loss wasn’t such a bad loss in the overall scheme of things.

Don't they have the same bracketing rules as the men. They had Michigan possibly playing Purdue in the first round if Purdue win the play in game

Yes, the committee will slide teams up or down a line to try to avoid match ups in the first two rounds.

I believe that changes if the teams only played once in the regular season or something like that

You made me look!  Here is what it says from NCAA DI women's basketball principles and procedures for 2023.

• Teams from the same conference shall not meet prior to the regional final if they played each other three or more times during the regular season and conference tournament.
• The committee will attempt to keep conference teams from meeting until the regional final round.
• If the committee is unable to balance the bracket after exhausting all possible options, it has the flexibility to permit two teams from the same conference to meet each other after the first round.

Some more items on the topic:

Additional Considerations

After adhering to all principles for placing teams in the bracket, the committee will take into consideration the following items:

• If possible, avoid rematches of regular-season games in the First Four games and first- and second-rounds.

• Any principle can be relaxed if two or more teams from the same conference are among the last four at-large seeded teams participating in the First Four games.

• Avoiding rematches of previous years’ tournament games in the first- and second-rounds.

• After examining the previous two years’ brackets, the committee shall attempt to avoid moving teams or conferences out of its natural region or geographic area an inordinate number of times
