You be the coach -- for s***s and giggles

Recommended Posts

Time for you to say what you would do differently.  Give me a strategy to plug in to the PC Stellar game and I'll sim it -- five games at Iowa followed by five at Wisconsin and I'll give you the results.  Whoever's strategy produces the most wins receives the Couch Coach Prize.  Tiebreaker will be pointspread of the ten games.

Catches:

1.  You can not put more than ten players in a rotation as this is a PC Stellar limit.  Give me your five starters and how much you want each player in the rotation to play off the bench.  Note that if you a play a player too much beyond the number of actual minutes he plays, fatigue can set it.  MAKE SURE YOUR TOTAL TARGET MINUTES TOTALS 200.

2.  Want a special rule for sitting players based on number of fouls?  Let me know.  Default rule will sit players with two fouls in the first half;  players with four fouls will sit until there are four minutes in the second half.

3.  Want a greater emphasis on outside or inside shots?  Let me know.  Note with those inside shot option on, you can expect about 30% less threes, with outside on, expect about 30% more threes.

4.  Want the team to play zone instead of man-to-man?  Let me know.

5.  Want to press?  Let me know when.  Note that this option will increase the number of fouls you commit but increase opponent turnovers.

6.  Want to push pace less or more than IU actually does?  Let me know.  Increasing pace will increase number of possessions, slightly increase shooting percentage as it can produce some layups, but will increase turnovers.  Both teams players will get tired faster.  Slowing down pace will reduce possessions, produce higher shooting percentages but also poor ball handling teams will turn the ball over more often due to a greater number of passes.

My coaching strategy:

Starters and target

Johnson, G  30 minutes per game (IMO, I'd rather have a love/hate point guard than one I just mostly hate)

Stewart, G  25 minutes per game

Galloway, F/G  22 minutes per game

Thompson, F/C  32 minutes per game

TJD, C  35 minutes per game

BENCH

Kopp, F 20 minutes per game

Geronimo, F 13 minutes/game

Bates, G 10 minutes/game

Lander, G 8 minutes/game (I'm waving the white flag on Phin......at this point the Minnesota game just looks like a fluke and he didn't look like he wanted the ball at all against Iowa)

Leal, G/F 5 minutes/game

Foul rules:  pull player if they pick up their second foul with more than ten minutes in first half;  put back in at ten minutes.  Put on bench for remainder of half if they pick up their third foul.  In the second half, use default -- pick up fourth foul, is until 4 minutes left.

Keep inside/outside emphasis the same.

Stay in man-to-man

Press if team is down in the second half with less than ten minutes left.

Only push pace if down more then six points in the second half with under ten minutes left.

I would go with a 8 man rotation.

4-5 position, TJD,Race, Geronimo.  I would bring in Geronimo in for Race at the under 12 timeout. After 3-4 minutes bring in Race for TJD. In another couple of minutes bring in TJD for Geronimo.

2-3 position. Stewart, Kopp and Galloway. I would do the same sub pattern as the 4-5 position.

1 position Johnson and RP.

Doing this would always have either TJD and Race in the game as well as always  having an outside shooter.  It would always have at least two starters in at all time.

IU Scott put down almost verbatim what I’ve said in other threads but a few important changes:

would go with a 9 man rotation.

(4-5)  TJD 34, Race 34, Geronimo 12 - Geronimo always playing the 4, Race slides to the 5 for 3 minutes each half while TJD sits.

(2-3)  Stewart 25, Kopp 25, Bates 15, Leal 15

(1)  Galloway 30, Johnson 10

The faster the pace the better on offense and pressure on defense

4- Geronimo 15 min
3- Kopp 15 min

I am changing the sim structure slightly — doing 2 at Nebraska, 2 at Iowa, 2 at home against Minnesota, 2 at home against Iowa, and 2 at Penn state.

the game does have one item I’m not in love with — when a player has a really low three point percentage in real life it’s engine looks like it will keep them from shooting three pointers altogether.  In sims, Race won’t shoot threes.

Really interesting game. Results might "temper" some of our comments on here (including mine). Thanx for doing this. Seems like a ton of work on your part. Appreciate it !

Starters:

TJD: 32 minutes

Race: 30 minutes

Galloway: 30 minutes (plays point guard)

Leal: 30 minutes

Stewart: 20 minutes

Subs:

Kopp for Stewart  10 minutes

Bates for TJD: 8 minutes

Geronimo for Race: 10 minutes

Phin for Leal: 10 minutes

X for Galloway: 10 minutes

Parameters:

Up tempo pace

35% press, 65% M2M

Race & Trayce are never out of the game at the same time. Phin & X are never in the game at same time.

Use defaults for fouls,  inside/outside same.

Let me know if I missed anything.

Got it.  For both of you, since I have to feed in 10 players, I'll put in players to fill the roster out but won't play them unless there are too many guys fatigued or in foul problems.
Sorry make my 10th option Leal please

In the first sim -- a double OT loss at Iowa -- he had to play 30 minutes becuase of X's foul trouble.  Lander scored 11 points but had 5 turnovers.

Also, FWIW, IU put up an amazing 61 first half points in the first sim against Ohio State on their way to a 95-76 win.  The next sim against Ohio State, they didn't get 61 for the game.
